Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Laid off from Wells Fargo 9/22/2022

I was a technology worker at Wells Fargo and was laid off last week. Supposedly, because I worked 100% remotely-- that's what I was hired to do-- and that's no longer good enough. I suspect, though cannot prove, that ageism is definitely in play as I am over age 60.
The intention is to further ship most technology jobs to India. And judging from the amount of work product that came from India that my American baser team had to turn around and fix, relying on India technology workers may be another in a long line of stupid moves by this company. The stagecoach is broken and not repairable.

Speak to an attorney about the possibility of a discrimination lawsuit based on age.

Did they ask you to sign anything and tell you that you can only sign it today?

The remote thing just sounds like an excuse. If you were in a core or other major city it shouldn't be a problem. My group is only expected to go in once a week. My boss is in SoCal so he'll go into a local office there.

The age thing is next to impossible to deal with. They can just decide to get rid of you and part of the severance deal is you won't raise a stink over that sort of thing. They could be trying to get rid of older (higher paid) employees. But I think it's a big mistake to gut your veterans b/c they know how things work and why they work that way. I've seen a whole bunch of new people being hired from the outside in sr. tech roles. Yeah, they may know certain technologies (e.g. cloud), but they aren't going to know squat about internal systems, processes and how those systems work. It takes years to understand how things work. I left a position a few years ago and it took 3 people to cover my portfolio of apps. And to this day I still get questions about stuff b/c with at least one of the systems, nobody has figured out how it really works.

Good luck OP -- hopefully you have plenty of years and many months of severance

Sorry to hear my friend. We must come to realize things at this toxic bank. Business is not good and all tech will be in India sooner or later. We don't make those decisions. Hopefully, at some point you can enjoy the theater of this place collapsing into the failed bank dust.

tech is definitely not best in class. Business has dollars for projects but can’t get anything done because of tech capacity. they keep laying off the SMEs

All those technology contractors, created a major headache for me and others. There is so much zombie code in our CRM systems that we are forever trying to clean up the mess from broken ETLs.
Luckily, or unluckily, I’m both business and technology. Very unique arrangement. I’m so sick and tired of training contractors who can barely program, who don’t even understand the SORs they work with. Now I’m part of some obscure a little group so far back in operations, that hardly anyone knows we exist. And to even exacerbate the situation, what we do is very important.
I’m stuck dealing with zombie code in a zombie company. It’ll be a blessing if I get laid off.
On a positive note, I did hear of new groups being created that actually add value to the company. Some SMEs were transferred during the reorg. Hooray for them?
