Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Virtual desktop

New post on teamworks. Sounds like we’ll be able to work from anywhere including the use of our own personal devices. I wonder if this means I can be content with my job again and go fully remote the way we were for two years. Thoughts?

If they want me to use vdi then they need to let me WFH. No way am I using a personal device if they are still doing the bs RTO plans.

In a world where companies use your social media posts to fire you, why would anyone be ok with using their personal computer for anything work related? I understand the convenience aspect but it's just not worth the risk even if you're not doing anything remotely shady. How does Wells plan to solve for keyloggers and viruses on the host computer? If you unknowingly get a keylogger installed on your computer and a hacker releases confidential WF info due to it, guess who's head is getting chopped off.

I'm already on the VDI and have my pilot to work from any machine. It works. It's decent. It is persistent (I can disconnect from one machine and connect from another and all my stuff is open).

However, this is NOT a way to allow people to WFH permanently. I have been doing that for more than 10 years, and my manager just told me that very soon, an announcement will come that everyone has to be in the office 3 days a week or find another job. No exceptions.

That will make it time for me to look for another job, outside the company. I'm not moving, and it's too long a drive to the nearest office to do that frequently.

Chase has been using VDI for years. I mention this for no particular reason.

They were looking into VDI prior to COVID. They wanted to do away with personal workspace. You come into the office, pick any desk/chair and start working. Then you can go straight home and work on your own laptop for another 8 hours to make up for the people they cut.

You couldn't be more wrong, and it is roughly the same level of security as logging into your laptop from home.

Security is trying to squash this due to the significant risk it poses to the bank. When we get hacked, it will be because of this dumpster fire.

There are going to be a lot of frustrated people moved to WAVE without persistent virtual sessions. Those will not be available until a later release of WAVE.

It is all about reducing the $$$ savings from headcount reduction within PC/laptop support teams. That is the priority over getting a solid solution implemented first for users.

I, personally, have no experience with a virtual desktop. I do have experience working with people who use them and acting like they can't/don't have issues is just as baseless of an argument as acting like they're the worst solution ever.

I've been at the forefront of M$ technology rollouts before, it never goes as smoothly as they promise us it will. 'You'll only ever need 6 Active Directory controllers", "You can apply as many GPOs to an OU as you want", "Skype is better than Lync".

They even failed the migration of the most popular game on the planet to M$ accounts

"Wondering where you heard this? 1 yr ago saul had ? in ama that stated we have to buy/use our own PC. No $$ from WF at all cuz "everyone has a PC". "

They said the exact same thing when they eliminated internet expenses while working from home. "Everybody has internet".

It remains to be seen if it will work. If our technology scripting team has their hands in it, it will be suffering lousy upgrades. Every time this company pushes out an upgrade, I hold my breath. I’m sure I’m suffering technology PTSD.

If they fix the tech so it works worth a damn, I'd like this move. I can set up a blackberry pi PC dirt cheap, only use it for work, and never have to worry about tech support again. The only problem is, I doubt tech will ever make it work very well.

Here is the forumla. Chuckster the Huckster earns 22 mil a year. There are approx 220 thous Wells employees. Will he be generous? I mean, these numbers divide pretty evenly. Who will ask him on the next Town Hall?

I keep that little camera covered on my laptop. I don't trust anyone on the other end. Who knows, maybe they can watch you and you don't know it.

That is the only reasonable way to do it. Who would be d-mb enough to use their current laptop of personal computer?

My understanding is that if you don’t have a personal device, then you will need to come into the office every day. I also heard that you have to have a computer because tablets aren’t supported. Not sure what this will mean for employees that really can’t afford their own devices. It will be interesting too if we have another “pandemic” and we don’t have equipment for those that don’t have their own. This last pandemic worked because almost all employees had a corporate laptop and we just went home. Won’t work if they have to get equipment when the world will have supply shortages.

There was a guy in my area who told me this stuff would happen maybe a decade ago and no one believed him. Some even flipped out just discussing it, but so far everything he has said has been correct.

You’re more right than you know. Bid for work is coming to many jobs. Making everyone a contractor is a big part of that.

False comment was for you.

@aet+1iIShXKs
Totally legal. You’re going to see many businesses doing the same in years to come.

@zjx+1iIShXKs
Not the case here. When you sign out all data in the virtual session is erased and when you sign in again you’re essentially on a new computer with a new computer name. Nothing can be saved to the virtual session. Everything has to be saved to a drive.

False as far as the virtual stuff goes. Since data can’t come outside of the container, there would be no need to confiscate the personal device.

Chrome books can be used. The app is in the App Store. If computer breaks that’s on you to repair, WF won’t pay anything for that and they won’t give stipends.

Make sure you read the fine print. They have the right to confiscate your personal devices if you choose to comingle with work.
Your tangible device not just the "container" with your work profile becomes property of the bank if they believe you have information that can be deemed as "discoverable" in an audit or litigation.
When you sign that paper regarding privacy read the entire document. You have no rights to privacy when using any devices for work, the enterprise owned devices, third party vendor devices, testing devices, or your own personal devices.
Be careful when signing those types of contracts. They can remove them from you with a court order if needed.

They should give people a one time stipend to pay for a new laptop for people who don’t have one. I haven’t owned a laptop in years (live off my chrome book which I don’t think can be used), so I literally have to purchase a computer to work here.

Also, what happens if your computer breaks? It can take days to get it fixed/replaced. Seems like there could be legit issues here.

"They can’t see any personal data on your device."

They can't? As in there are policies against doing so, or that it's technically impossible? Is that container able to be hacked?

VDI doesn’t mean remote work. It means when you go to a hub location, you can sit anywhere and have the same exact hardware/software experience. If anything, it means hot desking.

Personally, I loved working on VDI at a previous employer. No laptop to lug around or worry about getting stolen or being otherwise responsible for. Plus, when you “log off” and then log back in somewhere else, your desktop is exactly how you left it.
