Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Everything is so disorganized

I started working at Verizon two months ago. From the first day, I've been overwhelmed by how disorganized this place is. My old workplace had its issues, but at least it was well structured. Here, it's pure chaos. Everything I start to do needs adjusting or fixing and I often can't do my job because there is so much I have to do before I even get to it. How is this place even functioning?

Verizon has a major issue in organization structure. There are basically 3 tracks throughout the company and most Tech leads have a 4th. First is a sales track, mostly as an individual contributor, individual contributors/technical leads, and finally management track.
The track missing is project and program managers, they are the key to transformation. Without this last group they lack an organization that is designed to work across organization for sucess. The problem here is managers are simply paperwork players, and you need dedicated teams to lead programs and projects that have the backgrounds like technical, financial, or back-office systems.

I would say all Sr. Managers or 1st level managers need hands on technical expert. There are too many people who have been shuffled around 5 times in reorgs and are managing things they don't understand.

This sounds much like when I first interviewed with Worldcom in their heyday. And then we all know what happened

Verizon has three major issues:

  • - Verizon needs a new CEO capable of providing effective telecom leadership.
  • - Sr. Engineering & Operations Managers need to have both technical training and hands on work experience.
  • - Engineering & Operations needs twice is current manpower.

The sad part is it wasn’t always like this. 2.0 was the biggest mistake in many ways .
