It is the Ford way. The great people leave quickly, or if forced to stay due to family issues retire as soon as they can. Usually you see these people getting “offers” to leave as they make their peers look bad by comparison.

The mediocre settle in for lifetime employment, filled with the requisite complaining and entitled behaviors.

If you stay you will either become one of the mediocre, or be shoved out by the mediocre masses.

As much as carcar claims he is going to change the workforce, all that has happened is an acceleration in the great workers leaving, and an increase in the mediocre masses.

This is a good post and a super good question. First and foremost... What are you still doing here, especially if you're having to ask this type of question so young in your career? Given everything you're probably reading in the threads, it gets infinitely worse the longer you stay (and the older you get). Run!

These people are exactly the way you're describing because most are the product of their Ford environments over the years- can't sum it up more succinctly than this. Should you stay, this too will be you.

Quite simply people stay for a few reasons. 1. the pension is literally a lottery ticket that pays year after year- us old timers literally cannot walk away from it. 2. Many of them have become useless with expectations and accountability so low that it's like getting paid to do nothing day in and out. 3 they are in a financial pinch for a plethora of reasons- adult children who won't leave, tons of grandkids, poor spending habits, divorces, poor health, you name it... 4. No plan for retirement which translates into fear of the unknown, so people continue on and on. Once a person retires, there is no turning back to Ford in virtually all instances.

And this is the key thing Ford has been dealing with for about the last 10 years. They gorged on the external hiring, thinking the "tsunami" of retirements is finally coming. But they found they can't separate those over 40 en masse because they'll get sued and many are dead wood. Call it like I see it. You're really in a conundrum because you have to wait for this layer of clay to leave, retire, or whatever coupled with more and more deserving people in line for limited promotional opportunities. Keep in mind many of these promotional opportunities will go to people not even hired in yet per Jim F. Good luck!

There is no classic FMEA because nothing will change afterwards anyways. And you are stuck in meetings because when LL's high up learn something isn't working they will hammer on good documentation and alignment.

I work in validation, and I see product failures all the time. Basic stuff that was not engineered right in the first place, there no time do a proper FMEA. Engineers are stuck in endless meetings, thinking that is what engineering is all about - PowerPoint and meetings.

No one ever retires.

The whole sense of tenure here is kinda frustrating. Dunno if its cause long term employees never saved during their career and literally can't quit without starving, or they're just comfortable.

Hear me out. I know its a hot button issue, but this comment isn't meant to be malicious. From someone young in their career is darn near impossible to have vertical mobility until positions open up. Its frustrating because a lot of those people that don't leave are cynical to no end, hate their job, hate everyone they work with, complain about everything and have less motivation cause they put in their time. Its demoralizing to be around, and frankly it doesn't create a rewarding environment for anyone able and willing to go beyond what's asked since there's no open place to be promoted into.

@OP. The #1 is the cause of all evils in the company. One thing that shocked me when I started working at Ford was the inability of the company to use standards. We use acronyms that are well known globally, but with different meanings inside Ford, which threw me off the first months during meetings. We cannot buy or implement any vendor solution without adding or removing something, and we end twisting the standard solution in a convoluted customized Ford way.

I still hate management incompetence more, but this "Ford way" gets me.
