Now that I’m leaving, I’m thinking about how much the Nike has changed in the 10 years that have passed since I got the job here. It's as if nothing is the same anymore. How much has Nike changed since you came here?

Nike used to be fun.
People were a lot more relaxed.
We worked hard but also played hard.
There was more advancement potential for talented people.
You used to be able to tell off-color but no-harm-intended jokes. Now I wouldn’t dare do that.
Working at Nike now is like working at any large company. Nike lost what made it unique and fun.
From a decade ago until now, I’d say we operate like a traditional corporation. What made Nike stand out as an employer (for some) back in the day was the college like parties we’d have on campus. I remember prior to the 2 drink maximum limit during thirst Thursday, people use to get trashed, then drive home. You could also sweet talk yourself up the ranks, basically do anything you wanted. Have lavish travels then brag about it once you got back. Get gifted expensive watches and shoes…
Unfortunately for a lot of us that game didn’t come quick to us. Now climbing the ladder is probably even tougher because expectations are too damn high to even move up to a director role. Need 20 years of experience at least 3 different employers and the will to snap necks to move up. Then again, seeing kids getting promoted to director at 28 wasn’t also the greatest of eras either…
