AFAIK, they can't lay you off b/c of being on FMLA or leave. BUT-- if they can say it was because of other reasons they can apparently.

When my team was displaced my fellow team member was just released from the hospital after giving birth. She was laid off with a three day old baby.

I do not think they will lay you off while on the leave, but if they wanted they'd be able to do so (legally).
