Some complain about micromanagement but my problem is that my boss doesn't really understand what I do. Lots of bosses, in many companies, supervise those whose jobs they don't understand in the slightest. Some even like it, but it's becoming a nightmare for me. It is very frustrating.

OP is a bot. A generic post for any company on this site.
It happens but you should be at least a highly paid band 6 if that's the case. So if you're a highly paid band 6 quit whining. If you're not then you deserve a raise. You should be able to find something with the current unemployment rate.
There are plenty of managers who do not have a clue on what their employees do. I actually had to take over and lead the team because the manager failed at managing and could not communicate out to their own boss what the team was working on. Took a vacation to reveal the truth. So no OP, you are not the only one facing this issue.
Have you been able to sit down with your boss to understand their vision and what it is they expect of you?
Maybe this is a situation where it's an opportunity to go to them understand their vision and also have a discussion to identify what it is they think you're currently tasked with and what they're under the impression should be your highest priority task or project.
If you've already knocked that out and have that initial conversation then it may be a reflection of a poor manager. Otherwise, sounds to me like there is a difference in the expectations of the manager and their understanding of the role versus your understanding of your role and what you believe to be the top priorities.
Certainly a situation where conversation about that one-on-one would most likely help to clarify.
