Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Does anyone actually get contacted when applying internally??

Not even a rejection email or anything. How do people move laterally or move up ? Do a million people apply internally and they just don't even bother sifting through? Is it just a formality but the manager has someone in mind already and they don't even bother interviewing ?

Verizon recruitment HRs are very incompetent imho. Few years back, I had 3 principal engineer positions open in my team. In 4 months, our recruiter produced 2 resumes (these positions were open externally as well). We gave on her and found good folks by reaching out on linked in.

Earlier this year, I had DMTS position open up in my team. After 2 months of job posting (job was open internally and externally), our recruiter forwarded 1 resume - lol.

I personally have applied to several open positions in company in past, but never got an interview. I can confidently attest that Verizon recruitment HR is worst of the worst.

As a long time manager I can tell you this is highly dependent on the HR recruiter assigned to the job posting AND how motivated the hiring manager is. I've had really great recruiters working with me and also some real bad ones. One of my last postings had 2 awful recruiters (who both left) before it landed with a good one. Recruiters generally only pass thru resumes they think are a fit. Actual conversation with one of the bad recruiters:
me - I only see 2 resumes. Is that all we've had in 2 weeks?
recruiter - no you had 20 people apply.
me - .... and you only sent me 2?
recruiter - the others didn't meet all the criteria
me - you know what, go ahead and send me every single person that applied and I'll make those decisions myself.

I ended up hiring someone that the recruiter never would have sent me. And no, I didn't know them or have anyone in mind for my posting.

If you want to move up and you dont know people above you or have some skill/knowledge that is perfect for the job and impossible to find then you’ll have difficulty getting a response.

If you lack any or all of these things in todays Verizon and you want to move up find a job elsewhere as soon as you can. The longer you are at Verizon the larger your stock plummets.

Only lovers, friends and family members get contacted, usually before the job is posted

If you want a new job, you have to play the numbers and apply to a lot of jobs. For internal jobs you actually feel qualified for, I'd say plan to apply to 10-20 jobs to get an offer. If you get an interview, you're on the right track and probably have a 1 in 4 chance of getting that job. Also, definitely email the hiring manager if they're listed. You don't know what word(s) in the posting they actually care about and told HR to use for shortlisting.

Have a one-pager. Before you hit that apply button, email the hiring mgr & HR contact. Put Job ID # in the subject. 3 bullet points in email/cover letter.

Verizon is a relationship based and politically charged company. It is not a meritocracy.

Usually you want to hire the superstar in your field of vision and not some unknown. Most positions posted have a strong preference

For a desirable position yes. The trick is to be that person they have in mind.

When you apply for a job (internal), your boss is notified.

HR “pre screens” applicants/resumes and forwards the ones they think are “qualified” to the hiring manager.

For a lateral, your boss can claim “needs of the business - you can’t leave” to HR / hiring manager and you wont be considered a candidate or offered the job.

For a promotion, your boss can’t interfere. However, more than likely, your boss (particularly Asian-Indian bosses) will call the hiring manager and bad mouth you or threaten the hiring manager so that you will not be considered or offered

Asian-Indian managers/execs in IT love to brag about how they block their employees (particularly American employees) from transferring out. Then they put them on the RIF list.

Usually when jobs are posted, there is already someone in mind for the role.

Biggest thing is make sure your resume has keywords for jobs you are applying for and having a Instagram that you post regularly on branch out reach other to a bunch of people in other lines of work utilize slack to network get on peoples calendar for 30 minutes

I checked all the boxes. I've applied for plenty of positions that I've been qualified for. Biggest thing is getting your name out there and already having a connection.

Verizon seems to like candidates that are already known either by their reputation or organizations that are part of.

This is why you'll see a bunch of the same culture as across teams. You'll see that certain organizations are heavily dominated by Rutgers alumni. It's a sad thing to say and I hate saying it but it really does come down to who you know. You got to learn the game and play it. It's not just about merit and hard work unfortunately.

I have been completely ghosted on 3 out of the last 4 internal applications I’ve submitted. This even after I’ve reached out to people in that org, had director references, and had my DM make contact with Directors in the hiring managers org. Pretty frustrating

You'll have bad luck just cold applying internally. Most people either have a few references or have worked with the team in the past so the hiring manager knows them.

If you don't have a connection to the role through your network then ask the hiring manager for 15 minutes to talk about the role and share your resume. This is how a few people joined my team. We almost never hire externally.

Good luck
