Thread regarding Fiserv Inc. layoffs

People waste energy

I too have the need to vent sometimes but some people really take it to the extreme. I have a colleague who has been terribly bitter for a year but he is still here. I believe that a year is enough time for someone to find a new job. I don't mean to offend anyone, but isn't it better to focus on what we can control, which is job hunting? Because what can we control here? - Nothing!

So many factors go into getting a new job. The longer you stay the harder it becomes. For some they don't like switching jobs, it's not just a minor thing it's what defines them. How often do you meet a new person and the first question is "what do you do?"

People also tend to hold a lot of faith in their employer, why would they leave when they love the company. If something bad happens it's not the company, it's just the events, they rant about the events, make them go away and the company will be great again... right? Same with sports, how often do you hear, "they just made a bad call," possibly with more expletives. Some team seem to make bad calls for years and years, but people still root for them. Would you ask them to switch teams?

Lastly, as one other posted said, sometimes you can't for other reasons. They mentioned medical. Could be a marriage, a divorce, buying a house, kid on the way in or out, nearing retirement, elder care. Or maybe something they like about the job, like a coworker they have the hots for or just a good friend they like to rant to that then comes in this site and complains about them... not you, someone else... Or it could be combination of several of these, and maybe one ends and another starts. Tons of reasons they just need to wait a little while longer.

Anyway, I stuck around for several of these reasons, then was laid off. Within 2 weeks I had another job paying 40% more, and I visit this site because the new company has no drama. Good luck to you and your friend!

A toxic job or a toxic environment can take a psychological and emotional toll that, depending on how severe, can take a while to get over. It becomes a vicious cycle and for many, it is very hard to get out of it.

It is easy to say "don't let it bother you" but for some, it can be hard to do! And some people just cannot make the mental break while they are still at the job.

I agree however, if a person is still struggling that long, they may need some career counseling, or even personal counseling, to rebuild the self esteem and positive outlook that are needed to succeed in a job search. They should not feel bad about getting either!

I had to ride out a medical situation before I could leave.

It’s hard but yes. Take a deep breath, take a walk. Fiserv may have changed but it may still work for you. If not, that’s ok too, but don’t let it wreck you

Agree. Some people do tend to want to complain but not get moving. Until the layoff comes.
