Working my best, picking up the slack, being punctual, eager to learn, bringing solutions and not problems - - - - - - none of that is enough for my boss to stop treating me like dirt. I really care about keeping this job as long as possible, but I don't think there is any way that he will finally start valuing me. Is the only solution to find another job?

This is quite common. I'm in the same boat. Unfortunately, Fiserv lost its wonderful culture the day the powers that be decided to let First Data take over. At one time the company was very family oriented and a pleasure to work for. Now it's all numbers, sour attitudes, and a lack of appreciation for the folks really keeping the company afloat.
"I assure you, your manager does appreciate his six figure bonus check. If you keep up the hard work, he might get an even bigger one next year."
Managers are lucky to get a $5,000 bonus. You are talking VP money to get to six figures.
Honestly my manager was so horrible and such a bully I just stopped caring. The recent layoff was the best thing that has happened to me in the last 2 years.
The sad part is HR is aware of how terrible the behavior of the managers are. As long as they deliver results, the means don’t matter.
My tenor was very disappointing.
What does your manager value? Figure that out and deliver it instead.
You are not alone in the fight, bud. Hang in there and secure a new job as fast as you can. Companies are desperate for your type of talent and will definitely value your commitment. I am on my way out.
Contact your MC member they will want to know this and they will help.

To paraphrase “war games”… the only way to win is not to play.
I believe this is a rhetorical question, and you already have the answer (because you stated you're a solution-oriented person).
