Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

We're paying people to train them and support them as they search for a new job

That's the impression I've been getting lately. We finally get somebody new we desperately need and that person is gone within six to nine months. Maybe a year, if we're lucky. Just the time they need to learn the ropes and then spend a few months leisurely looking for a new job. Now tell me there's nothing wrong with this picture.

Yes, it appears we are hiring people, training them, and once they realize what a dysfunctional company EM is, we are paying people to look for another job and leave.

Frankly, I don’t blame the people who are taking care of themselves and leaving. The company will take care of itself. From what I’ve seen the last few years, employees would be foolish to not take everything they can get and move on to another company.

I know it all comes down to money and the shareholders, but at some point, you’d think they’d see how much these policies are costing the company. Training people is expensive. On boarding people is expensive. A toxic culture costs the company in countless ways, especially when highly trained & talented employees walk out (or get pushed out) the door.

The PIP and ranking is fundamentally stupid when you realize how much “first pass quality” is costing.

If our processes were so good and we hire the “best”, why would we continue to target 5-10% every year?

It is literally costing millions if not hundreds of millions while adding no value to the corporation.

The forced ranking is either admitting we can not get hiring right or admitting that we are just wasting tons of money shuffling bodies in and out.

Shareholders should really ask more about how much time we are wasting on such a costly and pointless process.

Agree that for decades we not only trained employees very well but also paid them well and provided a long term career. The last few years has been something I have never experienced at XOM. This appears to be the new reality.

One of the biggest costs to a company that does not get proper attention is on boarding.

The ranking is simply stupid and fewer and fewer highly sought after, talented individuals will put up with it.

I was getting offers before I started looking. It was very easy to get offers once I really started to look.

Time it just right and XOM will even pay you for ~3 months while you have already started working at your new place of employment…

And to think, XOM gave me over $200,000 in relocation benefits…

You can fool people before you hire them, but after they start working everything becomes obvious. Obvious to anybody but EM management, that is.

You sounds like you are a contractor, because the way that you express your ideas how you train people. I worked for about eight year at EM as a contractor and most of the the me I was training EM engineers. My mistake!

Not just young, old too. I'm a 20+ year experience employee, doing the minimum work in EM, taking salary and looking for alternative employment as well as anything else I enjoy. Unfortunately, this is what happens when you treat people disrespectfully, you get the same disrespect back.

Everyone should be doing what’s best for their own development, so if the company isn’t able to retain people in marketable roles, it’s not the employees being “selfish”.
