Yes - safety is important, but some Departments take it to ridiculous extremes. The scale of risk is extremely low in R&D - especially compared to upstream production platforms, shipping and refinery operations. But rather than understanding this, they focus on such drivel as "hold the handrail", "walking is working", "use a sippy cup" and eliminating the risk of paper cuts, staple cuts, tripping over a paver and driver attention in the parking lot (when you can only drive at 10 mph and no-one points out that the pedestrians may be at fault). God, I DON'T miss the company safety culture at Annandale!
yes - legal obligations are why HSE exists but go work for a company that doesn't care about HSE regardless...so I disagree with someone being called an id--t but we do far more than a lot of companies do and I'd argue there is a culture of trying to keep people safe, mostly.

Are you stupid or something? No way I am getting close to any handrail. They are rusted and falling apart. I can cut myself holding on to that. There is no money for maintenance. It is safer to take my chances and don't hold to any stinking handrail.
HSE is stupid, until you get hurt and then bi--h and moan like so many exxon workers seem to.
At least exxon spends money on HSE - you might disagree with where some of it is spent but go work for an oil company 100 years ago and see how you go. Or just go work for one of the cowboys and see what its like with a finger missing here or your family with one less parent.
