As in I quit caring and started getting certifications with real cloud providers. After June 1 2022 it takes about a year for the next serious layoff rounds. I survived the June layoff but saw the writing on the wall. They broke apart my organization and I was left hanging and told by my manager to see if I could make myself useful. It was critical to make some changes before the next year.
What I heard was you will most likely be laid off next year and we need a miracle. I basically had a years paid vacation. I did the absolute minimum, replied to emails etc... I started playing video games remotely with game on one monitor and my email up on another.
I'd block out times for training. Yes I did train on tech that would make me valuable elsewhere. I got my Associate Solutions Architect certification form AWS... Also got the entry level (cloud practitioner) cert in like a weekend. I took the kids on vacation across the US.
I'd schedule meetings that required travel to California and take weekend trips to San Fran and Sonoma valley. I'd hang out whenever possible, take long lunches and punch up my linked in profile. I'd binge watch netflix when not playing video games.
I got the head space app and would meditate. I got a new boss and when he gave me an assignment I'd ask for his help, deflect to team mates and claim I lacked the experience necessary to complete the task. I knew I was on the lay off list and I didn't care.
I had been with Oracle for a combined total of 5 years. When as predicted I got the lay off notice I collected my 10k severance package took a two week vacation and slid into my new job I had interviewed for.
It's a no win game at Oracle, they are milking support on existing customer and not growing anything. The cloud is a joke as it integrates with nothing, except maybe some apps running in select Azure data centers. The database is seen as legacy and no new apps are being written on it. If you stick around and try you will eventually end up in the same boat I was.
Who cares? Why care? Why bother? Take my advice look out for yourself take time to sharpen your skills, work out catch up on netflix and enjoy life.
