Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Interest in the job here

I really don’t believe that 10 applicants are ready to take someone’s job here after that person leaves. I don’t believe it, because my colleague's left, and still no one has come in his place. To me that means that the interest in the job here is not great.
I'm just not sure if the reason for this low interest is the industry in general, or the atmosphere in this company?

@3crh+1froxZ1R, Management does not throw tantrums. They just send you an email telling you be return to the office. Want to respond like an adult? Just go back to the office and do your job. Play time is over.

You mean like management is trying to do by forcing us back after we have successfully worked from home for 2 years?

Can’t we all just visualize the last poster throwing a tantrum, stomping his feet on the ground, and throwing his toy across the room. You need a time out.

If you can make more money in big tech than at Oxy you are probably paid quit low anyway and do not have core technical skills. You might as well leave because you are not part of the group the company cares about.

Face it many want to work from home and since they can’t they trash Oxy and other companies. I don’t blame them for wanting to work from home, but it just is not happening as much as you think. Maybe in big tech, so you just have to work there. It is really that simple.

Its not the industry its the coming into the office as mandatory. Smart people have found an alternative to a more productive work life so they have more personal time. Sure Oxy will find very few up and coming new grads for a short time but they will not stay long at all maybe right after and many even before being vested but then bags will be packed for greener full time work from home options that will be multiplying as time goes on. Then all that training time and money will be lost and the process will have to start all over again.

The sad thing is @1iel wants to be here to badly. He got fired for being a poor performer otherwise he would be. He was happy to be here with all of the historical issues he mentions, and the only reason he isn’t here is because of his poor performance. He wants to come back to badly he follows the company’s activity, trolls layoff sites and seethes hard.

Maybes people don't want to work for Oxy with their track record. You can make up getting hundreds of applicants all you like, better technical roles not being filled speaks for itself. Piper Alpha, North Dakota, Anadarko deal, Tatweer, Maynas Carjenas, Petrolia, gas line explosions at 35R in Elk Hills, Libya corruption. Its a low performing company with a lot of risk given the competency behind all of those disasters, especially the ongoing pride in the company and the number of people ki---d over the years. Keep telling yourselves you're the best. That'll make it ok.

@1asb+1froxZ1R. It could be they figured they were just fine without filling your position. I’ve seen that happen many times especially when low performers leave.

There are always tons of applicants; however not all come from Apache or Conoco, where Oxy takes prides of bringing in folks from. If a serious position must be filled, the most rational thing to do is to hire an intern. Did I make myself clear?

Atmosphere of the company, 100%. Accidental blows.

Sometimes positions are open but they never fill them. Sure there are lots of applicants and resumes but they never take the next step of the phone or video interviews. Once the workforce is back to the office they will redesign the organizations which may result in both layoffs and filling the open positions.

I left in May and my position was still open in January of the following year. Don’t believe the fan boys about Oxy being the Mount Olympus of oil and gas.

Regarding your colleague who left and there were no applicants for the job. Could it be that the position was not being replaced. There was a lot of that going on when the VSP was given. They simply did not replace some of the positions.

You will get hundreds of resumes for some positions. I had to sort through many and ended up with more than 10 strong candidates, and found one that stepped right into the role and has been doing well. Not everyone looks at Oxy as a bad place to work, but I see how some just don't want to or fit in here.

Depends on the job function. If it’s more hands on like field personnel then I think those jobs are relatively easy to replace. If the job function involves being on the computer for majority of the day then yeah there’s no interest in working for Oxy. Especially for job functions that are more tech oriented. There’s very few tech workers that want to be tied down to an office and waste time commuting when all of their peers are WFH permanently. If a tech worker is applying for a job at Oxy they’re probably bottom of the barrel and you probably wouldn’t want to work with them. In a world where technology is becoming more and more necessary to compete I feel like Oxy is in for a rough time in the next couple of years if they make coming into the office mandatory. Just my two cents. I moved on with many others when they tried to make us go back into the office in October. It’s been fun watching these board posts when it doesn’t affect me personally :)
