Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Landing a job in Oracle middle management is the dream

They barely do anything but they make good money and never have to worry about layoffs. It doesn't get much better than that, does it? The only problem is, to get a job in middle management you need to kiss some major a-s and that's not exactly something I'm good at. Sometimes I wish I was, though. Sometimes I really wish I was.

This is both wrong and correct. The money is not that great - same problems with no raises and equity (except probably OCI). DEFINITELY NOT IMMUNE TO LAYOFFS. Yes, if you don't kiss a-s and actually try to be a good manager, leader and person, you will get axed. Then you discover being a manager at oracle is meaningless to the rest of the world because you have not developed true management skills. My recommendation is to try to force change to make the place better like I did and when you get axed, understand that it was for the best.

Sure, become a middle manager at Oracle. Just check your ethics, conscience and soul at the door.

It’s sad that the OP’s dream job is a job where they get to do nothing. Is that really what you aspire to be? Nothing? Oracle is a repository for people like this.

Don’t work at Oracle. Too many people there are just like the OP. Desperate to make money for doing nothing and willing to lie cheat and steal to get there.

If you play the game and go along to get along, act like an organ grinder's monkey, odds are you will do just fine. If you speak up and try to do what you feel is the right thing, you will get a little red dot placed between your eyes. My Own manager was the latter and got hacked out the first viable opportunity. Along with the rest of us. He was good, but it didn't matter. He spoke up and was immediately placed on the naughty list.

Even middle managers are not immune to layoffs. I saw this happen many times. Even if you're not laid off, higher-ups can make life so miserable for you that you'd decide to leave on your own.

Dream or nightmare?

I have found that you cannot discuss any meaningful topics ( like career development, training, advancement, etc.......) with middle management here. if you get any feedback at all, it's just double talk and no genuine interest. The key for me to see how disconnected middle management is, is when I see how little, ( if at all) they are involved with new team member training - they offload this to others on the team... this is then the beginning of the lack of any involvement management has for the welfare of their employees.

The world is changing faster than ever. Competitors are years ahead of Oracle. O products are not doing well + law suits + attrition + inflation + debt = Middle Mgmt might need to worry. They are not as indispensable as they would like everyone to think.

Believe me, the manager bonus structure only works in good times.

Is it though?

Nothing about Oracle is a dream, at least not the kind of dream any sane person would enjoy. Some might call it a nightmare. Actually all would who know anything about it.
