I work here as a cashier. I would love nothing more than to leave retail forever. The lack of skills prevents me from having other options. Of course I will start working on expanding my skillset, but I would love to hear the experiences of those who managed to leave retail even though they didn’t have too many skills and therefore couldn’t be very picky.

please check out udemy. cheap courses but very good.
Virtually every business is hiring. Personally I’d recommend finding a small mom/pop business and get out of big box retail altogether. Look at trade specialty stores/shops—plumbing and electrical supply houses, flooring stores, hardware stores, etc. It’s still retail but a lot of those places are closed/only open limited hours on the weekend and closed at night. You can work there and have a life.
I do medical billing now. I don't have to talk to anyone most days, can work from home, and have job security. Check if your community college offers certification courses in it
