I really gave my best in hopes of getting a promotion. I had previously discussed this with the manager and the answer was to just keep making the effort and it would surely be recognized. What a lie!
It was never recognized, no matter how hard I tried. On the other hand, GF promoted some people who didn’t deserve it in the least.

@4vhk I second your opinion you are spot on. In my case I eventually just got tired of my management not transparent and moved to another group. It was utter frustrating. One more thing I will add is in one case I was even told that if you get promoted in a year do not expect a better rating the next year even if you are a top performer.
@OP+1
Best advice mate. Do slightly more then bare minimum and sit and wait your turn.
It’s been stated many times on this board many times over many years. What is on paper and what is reality of the GF promotion system is not the same. And the managers and leadership are consciously aware of this, but will continue to tow the company story and peddle the lie. They will never openly disclose the truth, but after some time you can become friendly with some and they will informally of the record explain the real deal.
At GF it doesn’t matter your effort, performance, achievements or results. You can have a great year or two where you have very visibly put in a tremendous amount of effort, but it doesn’t and won’t matter.
Promotions are based on a system of time. A rostering wheel or carousel of sorts. Whoever on your the team that has gone the longest without a promotion when the time comes will get it. Regardless of their and your performance. It just a game of sit and wait your turn.
I too fell for the trap you mentioned early in my career at GF. I had these conversations and meetings outlining what was needed to advance to next level, etc.
I went all out to hit and exceeded the stated/documented goals. And I was able to do this for a few years in a row. But the goal post/targets kept moving.
Every year I walked in proud I hit everything mgt layed out and then some only to be disappointed and confused.
Eventually I was close to reaching being burnt out and very bitter. Years sacrificed with little to show for it.
My achievements and work ethic/discipline did have an unintended result though. I became very friendly with many high levels of management and overall leadership. This allowed me to get insight of what was really going and the overall truth.
There other factors involved such as budget and headcount and work priority as it relates to EBIDA…. But the overall gist message is that the rating and promotion system in GF is fake and it’s all based on time with team and company etc.
You just have to wait your turn.
But Let me be 100% clear though! This doesn’t mean slack off and sit and wait your turn. You still have put in enough effort to be in good standing to be eligible for the promotion when you turn on the wheel comes.
It's ridiculous how broad the competence of the GF manager. I do not blame the managers. If you are an incompetent manager and GF continues to pay you, it is not your fault. GF does not support managers nor enforce the most basic rules, such as managers must have dept meetings and 1 on 1.
There are zero metrics to make sure managers do their jobs, zero.
If you really want a promotion, find out what is important to your manager, and only focus on that. Your manager and GF goals normally differ but if you want a raise, do only what is important to your manager.
Sorry to hear this but did you have a discussion on why you did not get promoted? If you think the reason was completely sh-t then you need to get out of the group
