Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

anything but managers

Many here have that title, but I don't see them as managers at all because these people don't deserve that title in any way. It is quite unclear how they came to this position in the first place.
What’s even more interesting is that the worst among them seem to be "immune" to reduction in management? No matter what happens, they are still here.

Well liked among leadership and other EGMs. OMG! A choice between a friend and a potential scammer is begging the question. A more likely choice is between somebody that you hate because they questioned something rightfully which hurt your ego or they are doing a better job than the friends of EGMs and somebody that you have a prior relationship with.

Many (not all) EGMs at GM pursue that role so they can torture contributors by using a number of psychological games to gaslight individual contributors. The role allows a feeling of superiority the EGM cannot achieve on the outside world due to various personal inadequacies and lack of self-worth. That said, a few EGMs are good people just trying to make an honest living.

Lots of folks i’ve seen promoted to egm were qualified but also well liked among other egms and leadership. While it may not seem fair, if you’re down to a couple candidates which would you go with; the one you’ve worked with for years and know what to expect or an unknown that all you have to go on is their word?

All of the EGMs I've had were former engineers. They went to school to be engineers and ended up in a position they weren't trained for.

People that can do, work and produce. People that can't, manage.

If you look at most of the technical type of fields, most managers come from business backgrounds, that manage groups of technical expertise. They have zero understanding among those that work within their department, nor how to do their job. They aren't special, they're simply privileged. I had many managers at GM with that privilege.

Most people can pick up the methodology of business ethics in their real world, and online learning. But, it is NEVER the other way around - ever. The best managers, are the ones that rise through the ranks, that were the grunts working right next to you, in the trench. I've only known one person in all of GM, to actually earn their manager status.

They were a fantastic employee, and became a fantastic, and well deserved EGM.
