Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

A-grade manipulation

I have a feeling WFC managers are specifically trained in manipulation. They keep piling unmanageable amounts of work on people but when we complain, we are told that everybody else is doing their best to do more with less and if we don't, we're only going to make it worse on our coworkers. Basically, we're manipulated into overexerting ourselves. If you dare and say no, then both the management and most of your coworkers look down on you as somebody who is not a team player. There is no winning here.

I think lower level managers are frustrated with the same things IC's are: inability to get anything done because of too many layers of confusing "process". Every process here has an entire team devoted to maintaining it in perpituity.

I could do so much more for this company. So could a lot of people.

But I gave up a long time ago. Every day I just put in my 8 hours within which I do my 15 minutes worth of real work, and then go home and don't even think about this dysfunctional place.

I'm within a year of retiring, so anybody with a career ahead of them who is in my position should find another job.

I think it's cutely naïve that the OP thinks WFC Managers are trained in anything relating to management or leadership. 99% of the are managers just because they've been here the longest.

OP, really now, conspiracy?

I think you meant to type "sore internet loser who resorted to critiquing grammar" instead of "Spelling Bot".

I think you meant to type “then reclassification”, not “than reclassification”.

I think you meant to type “mainly”, not “maining”.

Who's to say that a person's current pay doesn't include any given task? When I got hired, workday didn't exist (and neither did time tracker), should I refuse to use the new system until I get a pay increase? Or is time keeping simply part of the job regardless of the system? Sure, if you are being told to do things that are completely outside of job description than reclassification makes sense, but is it truly outside of description or is it just something you don't want to do? I know in my group those descriptions are very broad/inclusive. No one is asking anyone to do stuff outside of them, maining because there is no business need, but even if someone was trying it'd be difficult to find something that couldn't be interpreted as being within scope. If your job description is super limited and specific, good for you, but you're not 'sticking it to the man' by refusing to do other things. In the end, the only person negatively impacted will be you. Seems like a self-defeating proposition, but as someone competing with people with that mindset in the marketplace, I hope they continue to do it. By all means, carry on. Just don't come back here and complain that you get "meets" on every review when that is what you are intentionally aiming for and producing, and don't bellyache when you don't get promoted.

@ubp job requirements are changing on me, but my compensation isn't changing? You're going to get the same value out of me, no more, no less. If you want to maintain the same quality, increase my compensation commensurate with what you're asking me to do.

Stop acting like once you accept a job offer, you're stuck with it and have zero negotiating ability. Maybe in a call center, not in a organization that actually understands their workers' skill sets.

"I give them what they pay me for. No more no less."

This is the kinda thing that people say when they think that they define what they are being paid for, which is not the case. You don't have a line item veto. Job descriptions and group mission statements are sufficiently broad that they include just about whatever your manager is asking you to do, presuming it supports mission accomplishment.

If you don't want to review/approve report X, and your manager says it's part of your work, you could leave, just like any other job. What you don't get to do is say "no, that's not my job, so I won't review/approve Report X". This applies to every job ever. If you get hired by Dominos and refuse to make pizza and insist that only making breadsticks is part of your job, you can, and should be, fired.

We have a lot of legit things to complain about folks. Legit grievances. Self-dictated work tasks isn't one of them.

Anyone who is griping about the "mercenary" post I guess is fortunate to be in a unicorn situation. I've been a team player and as a result find myself for example scrumming for two teams. I am now way off track for my career path/aspirations and find myself struggling to justify a job title change back to what I was originally hired for.

Perhaps if I had been more assertive I would still be on track. Then again, I may have been kicked in the previous two rounds of layoffs.

@pxs+1eJUE7iH This is one of the most astute takes I've seen on career management on this website.

And what shall we say about someone who is unable to type a complete sentence, and who cannot express himself without using derogatory word-crutches?

“It’s all about seeing what they can get away with to raise their profile on the backs of your unrewarded efforts.”

That sentence puts in to words what I’ve been feeling about some of the managers in my LOB for years. Not escalating problems with the systems which put the firm at risk. Not willing to stand up for our customers or co-workers or ethics in order to show they are cutting costs or increasing profits. It’s blown up in their faces, too, but they will never come back and give credit to the people who tried to convince them to go in another direction.

My current boss is still pressuring us to come in to work a couple days per week even though RTO has officially been delayed. There is zero business need for us to do this but she wants to be able to show to the higher-ups that “she’s such a good manager, her employees want to come back”. Officially- we can say no, but she will find a way to make us miserable for years.

I gave up being a team player a while ago. My employment with Wells Fargo pays for my life… but it ISN’T my life. I’m extremely mercenary with the way I deal with my peers and management. WF is a “For Profit” corporation.. it’s not a charity. I give them what they pay me for. No more no less.

“What about your career?”.. to which I reply, “What career?” We’ve been living under the constant threat of layoffs since Charles In Charge took the reigns. It’s a high stakes game of Chicken. They don’t want to pay severance benefits, so they sew the seeds of discord and uncertainty to create an environment so toxic, that we’re tripping over each other to leave. No small feat considering we’ve been operationally remote now for almost 2 years.

Don’t be afraid to say “No”. I’ve done it quite a bit. When my manager verbally asks me to do something that I know is wrong or isn’t part of my job description, I ask her to send her request to me in WRITING via email. Manage your management. Always have a paper trail. They know what they can and can’t expect from you. It’s all about seeing what they can get away with to raise their profile on the backs of your unrewarded efforts.🤷🏻
