It’s just a front for some to be able to either create or answer emails after hours to show how dedicated the person is or not if you don’t follow the new rules of engagement.

This thread cracks me up. So many times I’ve tried to call Houston for support and they don’t answer if after 5. They don’t even have their voicemail inbox setup many times. I guess y’all need it to play games during all those meetings you are having at the mothership.

Company phones are not for travel.
At least distantly.
But knowing your favorite pubs and frequencies can be in company's interest.
And it's a write-off.
Turning it in would look suspicious.

I don’t know what you’re talking about, it took 5 mins of work for me to get a better laptop. I just asked and they gave me one. And BYOD is an inherently bad design security wise, either you’re personally compromising ALOT or the company is compromising ALOT. Both for laptops and for phones.

@2kiy+1derDwwC agree on the samurai and sword! I upgraded my laptop ram to 16gb out of my own pocket because the new laptop I was issued was still too slow for our huge speadsheets. It took just a quick order from Amazon and a sc--w driver, and I'm not even from the US. Some older folks laughed at me for subsidizing the company but they were here during the bo-m time and would rather live with very slow equipment than pay $1 to help themselves. There's so many hoops to jump through to request for the ram, so much explanation to do to my functional boss in another country, and the hassle simply isn't worth it. I pay $80 to regain my sanity and get back a couple of hours a month, and when I resign I'm going to grab my ram stick back before turning in the laptop. I'm EMIT btw... LOL

I mean, take mine. But I’m not allowing the company to use my personal phone for work. That’s legitimately a line I won’t cross after an early career experience at another company.

Yeah, that's not going to happen. If you need the phone for work your LT should know about it. Other than that get rid of it. I know many people who have had company phones for 20 years and they were never on call nor needed it. In fact they never had a personal phone always used company phone.

You may not know, but you can communicate via email on phones too. Way easier to check an email on your phone than open the laptop every hour.

I’ll gladly turn in my work phone in exchange for an allowance for my personal device. In manufacturing they would find it unacceptable if you decided to go off the grid and not have a cell phone, so not sure why we can’t pay a portion of employee’s phone bills like many other companies do.

I BYOD Android so I am not one of those insufferable two-phone people.
And yes, I would pay for my own GD laptop too so I am not stuck with something that I wouldn't even recommend to my Mom.

I never had a phone due to travel. I have a phone because I am on call several times a month, and that's how my users can contact me. There are many people with phones who never travel, but need to be be reachable.
