@1rjs+1dauQkQY can you elaborate? Why would it be unclear moving from non-emit to non-technical pm in tech?

The grass IS greener. The company I work for now is 180 deg different from xom. It was like xom was an abusive spouse but I stayed because it was better than nothing. Got Pip’ed in July 2020 and it was the absolute best thing that could have happened for my career. If in a tech role, get out now.

Another thing to consider - if you leave now on your terms you’re going to enter a booming economy with companies fighting over top talent.

If you wait until the next O&G recession when EM has to cut again, there’s no telling what kind of job market you’ll be forced to enter. Leave while you can and while you have options.

At the end of the day, the core work is largely similar, at least in the finance / accounting function.

What’s different is the flexibility, pay, and location. I didn’t dislike Houston, but I sure didn’t love it and I’ve now realized how many better places exist. Places with four seasons and outdoor activities. Close to other interesting places. I ended up near Raleigh and think it’s better in just about ever way. Better climate, access to mountains, access to nice beaches, a few hours from DC…. There’s so much more to life than work, and even if there wasn’t Exxon loses in that regard as well.

Good luck to those staying, but if you’re being honest the only reason to stay put is the fear of moving.

if moving to tech from EMIT, the decision to jump is clear. if moving to tech from core engineering to a nontechnical PM role, the decision is not as clear

Been gone about a year. The pay and benefits are better. The teams really work together without the BS and the personal "I'm better/above you" status cr-p we had to deal with all the time. Best decision I made was to leave!

No regret so far! The only regret is not to move out of EM earlier

It’s more of the same honestly. It started great at first but then when you looked under the hood of some of these “modern” tech companies you see they still struggle with the same problems XOM has and the more they grow the more they start implementing the boring big business stuff like SAP. And all of the corporate ladder BS is still present just they attempt to hide it better…at XOM at least everyone knew the game and the rules lol

Refreshing! Current and modern tools, technologies, and amenities. "True" flexibility to manage own schedule without being micro managed. As they say if employer doesn't want to change then change the employer.

Left to tech a few months ago but the grass hasn't been greener. Now considering coming back to EM. Thoughts?

Started few weeks ago, no regrets so far - great atmosphere and culture. One small thing I love is how modern everything is - super fast PCs, modern apps, no SAP bs, full cloud functions. Even though I am the core revenue stream now the company treats everyone equally and no one is beneath me (unlike how we treat the business lines vs supporting functions).

As previous poster said it’s going to take a while for me to let my guard down after being “ExxonMobil-ed” for so many years. I drank so much kool aid I was about to turn this offer down even though it was a pay raise.

It’s great. I feel overwhelmed with the amount of authority we are given in my company now and I struggle to feel confident sometimes since I am empowered and trusted. Guess it will take some time to learn this skill after 10+ years of XOM PowerPoint BS skills development. When I look back now, staying in XOM for too long has hurt my career more than helped but I’m glad it’s over now.
