since 2001 Cisco is laying off people every single year. most of the decisions:
not your performance but the profitability of your Line of Business or whatever new VP hired in the position (internal of external) have the wonderful idea to change thinks and assuming unreachible quotas (to win the VP position)...but...the new star VP change, fire people, reorganize territory accounts (reduce accounts in to your wallet o go to market) and after 2 x years of ki----g the business HE/SHE taking the bonus and leave.
In the meantime..Customers and Partners disappointing, Cisco Customer Wallet loosed in to the customers (Fortinet, Checkpoint, Paloalto, Juniper, Dell, HP, Microsoft ) and with the new VP comes start all over again
...AM not sharp enough...AM quarterly mandatory trainings...Quota multiplied by 2 and pressure to destroy more the Territory untill the new VP will come.

Nobody is leasing what the Customers/Partners think to have every year new AM and why we made this changes. Good People leave of get fire ending in competitors paying back all these madness

It is NOT due to your performance and don't play this game, it is all about numbers on a spreadsheet, the upper management has no idea what you do or how you do it, nor do they know what value you bring, anyone who tells you different is not only a jerk but just wrong. You a number on a spreadsheet where the upper management says... we need to let this many people go in this area. I have been at Cisco 13 years and seen this many times and always followed by how their employees are the best etc. etc. Just total BS. If you get LR, don't take it personally because I can assure you, you did nothing wrong.

If you hear your company announces hiring freeze, no fill of emptied positions, you know that their next move is layoffs. This time, recession is coming and real.

Left long ago. But, back then, it was common knowledge that Cisco applies forced ranking and "manages out" the "bottom 5%" every year. I am always surprised by the comments on here displaying surprise when layoffs are announced. Good luck, pilgrims.

Hello,
A branch of Cisco laid me off after only 1 month and half. I was a replacement for a maternity leave. I'm still shocked and wondering if it was due to my performance or just I was hired to fill that position for this period and good-bye. The reason of this lay off is budget cuts.. as per the management information. I just wanted your opinion as I feel guilty about my performance ( even though there was not much to do).

@55itp+1dLZu2DK, unfortunately that is very common. There are two types of of non-employee roles, temporary and statement of work (SOW). The former type is limited to 18-months and the later can run beyond 18-months.

You didn't mention which one you were, but even "long-term" roles are done one quarter at a time. Teams will get funding approved for the fiscal year for contract req's, but that budget is not guaranteed. It's based on company performance throughout the year. There may be money allocated for the year, and a contract signed w/ a consulting company, but the contracts are written for 1 quarter at a time and renewed every quarter. Temporary workers can be renewed 5 times for a total of 18 months. SOW workers can be renewed forever it seems. They either get converted after 1-3 yrs to an employee, or they leave because they'll never get an increase on their pay because the SOW is fixed.

I'm surprised that you were given 2 weeks notice, and more surprised that it didn't end at the end of the quarter. Usually contracts are not renewed and they let you go the week before the quarter end and end up paying your firm for that week to keep your firm happy that the contract was fulfilled for that quarter. But your firm will (most likely) not pay you for that week. At least, all of the contractors I've known and worked with never got paid beyond their last day. It was 50/50 whether or not they were given a head's up that they would not be renewed and told to start looking for a new gig, or if they were suddenly informed at the start of the day on Fri to turn in their laptop and any other Cisco property, their badge, and they were done for the day.

Started in what I was told was a long term contract role (Product Marketing) in June. Just found out the budget was cut and I’m on the street in two weeks.

If only the company worked as hard at retaining people as they do at promoting their (false) image and brand. Cisco is FAR from being a “great place to work”

Cisco TOP Indian management have decide to move Software Engineering Jobs from USA to India.

If your Director / Sr.Director are in India and leading team in USA.
Your jobs are in huge risk. They slowly going to move US jobs outside of USA.

They are losing good people for some strange reason and can’t seem to hire skilled people as it is. Perhaps the sf bay is too expensive for any business environment

One of the new hires that just joined my team said that Cisco on-boards 1900 new-hires a quarter! That was the statistic mentioned in their new-hire orientation session.
1,900! That's 7,600 people a year! No wonder we have annual LR's to get rid of 5-6K people every year. They can't afford in increase in operational costs by absorbing that much payroll debt.

But, at the same time, Cisco loses about the same number through natural wastage. That assumes the churn rate given at Leader Check-in is correct. I can believe it, every day my LinkedIn feed has multiple announcements from connections saying it’s their last day at Cisco. And these are quality people that are jumping ship.

Historically, Cisco has grown through its acquisitions and then had to correct. In all my time here that’s what happened, we grow through acquisition to about 75k staff and then LR to get down to around 70k.

Most red governed by contracts & SOW's.

Wake up. Since when have contracts and SOW's prevented Cisco from terminating a red-badge when they want to?

Besides, most SOW's are now written and renewed one quarter at a time, every quarter. Some project manager on each team spends about 1-2 weeks going back and forth with consultant agencies to write up, get finances' approval on, and then both Cisco and consultant agency's signatures on the SOW for another quarter. If they want to make a huge cut in red-badges for Q1 of the next fiscal year, they just don't renew them, or worse, they extend them for a couple of weeks instead of the quarter and make the agency sign an NDA saying they won't tell the red-badge that they're not being renewed.

Often, Cisco will just tell consulting agencies that they no longer need the service and terminate the SOW, effective immediately. Who knows if they actually pay the full quarter SOW's agreed upon price, but they probably do counting it cheaper than severance pay for employees. And the really sad thing is, those agencies cut their employee with no notice and no severance and pocket the contract money from Cisco if they get paid by Cisco.

Previous post close. More likely 10k blue, 5k red. Primarily US blue due to laws in other countries. Most red governed by contracts & SOW's.

5k blue, 8k red to be announced end of fiscal year. Blue badge 9 10 & 11 employees at top of range in their grade most vulnerable. Red badges assigned to project work most vulnerable. Expect broad de-funding of all projects.

Part of the company family!
It is funny how a company always state you are part of their family until the day they no longer need you! Especially if you are too old in their eyes. They quickly disown you from the family. Think about it! You may be the one making the decision as to whom to put on that list, but remember you will someday be there!
