“Focus more on doing good work” and “worry less about getting a sponsor”?
I’m sorry to say that, but that’s not a smart advice. 20 years ago maybe, if you didn’t have managerial ambitions.
Now it’s not about ambitions, it’s all about survival. Doing good work does exactly nothing for you these days. Take it from somebody lucky to be able to retire soon, after decades of doing good work.
I’m an experienced hire. I suggest you worry less about getting a sponsor and focus more about doing good work.
I am experienced hire. Can someone explain to me how you get a sponsor? Or how it works? There two clown team leads in Permian wondering who can be potentially sponsoring those two.
There’s a subjective and an “objective” part to our ranking. The subjective one is that, especially now, your supervisor is your God, who can strike you with his lightning straight into NSI for whatever displeases him/her, like not enough brown nosing.
The “objective” part is something the supervisor has no power over: the HiPos in each group have to come on top of the ranking, in the order of their sponsor’s might.
So it’s a harmonious combination of fake and subjectivity, the way EM likes it.
So bad that it creates a culture that inspires otherwise honest people to try to steal credit for the efforts of others.
Our senior management is always eager to find root causes for everything except when the root cause is forced ranking, then bo-m, cannot touch that, no matter how badly it affects culture and productivity.
