Thread regarding Sabre Holdings layoffs

Highly Flawed Revenue Model

  1. What we know is that no one has been able to change the contracts with airlines and hotels where revenue is generated per booking. Isn't this revenue model one of the main flaws?
  2. Does Sabre offer anything different than the competitors - Amadeus for example? Does Sabre have any real patents? It does have a large customer base.
  3. I would expect Sabre to continue to operate on a loss for at least the next 3 years. Sabre may need to resort to selling more products or borrow more money. I will let you come up with your own conclusion here.
  4. It seems that the way management decides who is essential and who is not is more of an art than a science. I have seen their RACI and MECE lists. They simply don't work. Some project manager(PM) decides who they need who they don't need. If the PM feels challenged by certain individuals, then they are added to the layoff list. This is decision making example.

"The biggest problem for US companies is that there are too many MBAs - Masters in Business Administration - leading companies. Spend less time on finances, less time in meeting rooms, spend less time on PowerPoint and more on trying to make your product the best it can be." Elon Musk, Dec 2020

It's true, not all engineers make great managers but a lot of the founders of successful tech companies have engineering backgrounds - Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Jack Dorsey, Reed Hastings, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, just to name a few. These unicorns have been able to make the transition to management and synthesize the two disciplines. The insights they have into technology and the development process have guided their management styles.

While it's also true that management makes or breaks a company, it takes an MBA to seriously f*** things up.

If the PMs do not do anything, why does Sabre keep them? The job can easily be absorbed by other roles.

PMs project managers also play the role of product owners due to lack of resources.
