So far I haven't complained much but now it has become physically and mentally unbearable. However, whoever I talk to from other companies in the industry, the employees there seem to be facing the same problem of unrealistic workload. I wonder though has GM raised the bar higher and burdened employees in this regard even more than our competitors? I'm interested because I'm seriously thinking about leaving.

"ethics that don't fit in the GM culture"
That would be any kind of real ethics ;)
The pandemic shut down the H1-B system and young Americans know that the more they make at General Motors, the bigger the target on their back. This make it hard to replace all the people they fired with cheap labor.
I don't remember there being a downturn leading up to the 2019 layoffs. I do remember a big tax break and billions of stock buy backs, though. In fact, I also remember being surprised at the amount of job postings General Motors had in comparison to the other automotive companies shortly before the hiring freeze and eventual mass layoff.
Its a cyclical business. IMO companies don’t want to over hire to only let alot of folks go in the next slowdown. Cant always have an exactly perfect workload
Imagine a company who hires loads of new employees only to lay them off 12-18 mos later to fund an EV smoke and mirrors dream while not quite figuring out how to prevent EVs from setting garages on fire or installing enough charging stations for it to work. Perhaps the queen of EVs could have used some of that money to build semiconductor chips in the US. No ... that would require a strategic CEO. When is the board going to question what’s going on?
It is our duty to do as little work as possible for as much pay as possible. People who don't understand this are mentally ill. Imagine getting upset about it.
Poster below me writing a novel complaining about slackers while slacking on this site during work hours
Imagine working for a company and NOT caring about what the ethics of your fellow employees are (while they are working from home (WFH), wink-wink...Imagine, working at a company and NOT calling out your fellow, unethical, slacker employees, but then calling out the employees who DO call out the slackers....Imagine working for a company that allows it employees to call potential customers "Unamerican" if they don't buy a Big 3 product, the whole time your own company is buying greater than 50% of their parts for non-American companies....Imagine working for a company that does harm to thousands, NO, 10's of thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands of supplier employees and their families (out sourcing their work/livelihoods) while not caring one bit as an American as long as you get a good wage and large bonus at your own place of work for yourself....Imagine....the list could go on and on about the average GM employee and GM culture that exists to this day and very hour!!!!! Must be absurd to try and imagine what I am writing. I know how people like the previous poster think....You will tell others that call you/GM out and tell them they should leave GM if you don't like us slackers or the horrible culture, but don't you dare ever call us out....and if you do I will call you a fake poster for having ethics that don't fit in the GM culture....
No, GM should definitely have a huge HC reduction to get rid of the deadweight that exists in every area of the company! And some of you will say "Don't wish harm on others and hope for a HC reduction" all the while that they and GM actually DO harm to others while lining their pockets with great wages/yearly bonuses!
Imagine working for a company and saying "do a HC reduction". Couldn't be more absurd, funny how many fake posters there are here.
@3apd+1dCk7RAb GM is the equivalent of your example of "bloated organization over in Europe"
We at GM are the bloated organization here in southeast Michigan! I am sick and tired of having good work ethics, putting in a solid day's work, trying to achieve works goals and deadlines while working with half of the people who treat their employment here as some sort of social gathering. Several days per week, I can't get in touch with colleagues (that I need to get actual "GM related work" done with), but I can't because they are too busy working on their hobby race cars, baby-sitting their kids or grandkids, grocery shopping, doing other personal hobbies/interests, or just plain not answering their phone or emails.
So, don't give me a warning about being careful of what you wish for! I am with the previous poster - GM do a HUGE HC reduction soon!!!!!
Over here at Stellantis employees are leaving in droves. There has been virtually no hiring in North America and many internal organizations, which is leading to massive work load increases.global Organizational restructures lead to more work here Over in Europe the organization is bloated and essentially doing half the workloads. Careful what you wish for because it is worse at other places
@1kny+1dCk7RAb -- You write "GM's problem is that about half of the white collar workforce is useless and a drain on the company."
I can't agree more with this statement! I wouldn't be surprised though if the actual number of useless workforce is even higher than 50%.
Working at GM is like some government jobs program for the majority of employees. Come on GM - just do a huge HC reduction soon! Get it over so that GM can become more competitive in the future. Mary, be a real leader, not just one in title only.
I work like 3 hours a day
I expect the work loads to be large for most everyone across all of the industry. Our company won some large contracts, and we didn't have the workforce to support additional work. So now we have to shift resources to the more lucrative work, at the expense of the existing programs. They'll get done when they got done, and if time allows. Some customers are going to start feeling even more pain.
Management in their infinite wisdom, always wants to keep a skeleton crew on hand. When opportunities present themselves, they don't have the workforce because it was always stretched to begin with. And now, we're pushing through that breaking point. We're hiring, but the bodies and talent simply aren't available.
Now that's some funny stuff. Irony.
GM's problem is that about half of the white collar workforce is useless and a drain on the company. They sit around, pretend to work for a bit and collect paychecks. Those that are capable and do work end up pulling everyone else as well at the expense of longer working hours.
You have two options if you are capable:
1-Realize your worth and apply at other companies, which are likely to work you just as much if not more, but at least they pay more.
2-Continue to do good work, but also become more keen on the politics and position yourself for high visibility. Visibility matters A LOT more than hard work, so this is your best chance to move up.
