Ranking - How EM Bakes The Cake

This was posted by @yzj+18fGgWaX on Dec 3 2020 in this EM folder. It ended up with + 43 and -1, if that means anything. Below, @yzj+18fGgWaX is outlining how EM does their ranking. I don't know if this is true or not; but based on my many years as an EM employee before retiriing (Engineer. EMDC - Drilling) this rings plausible to me:

'Not that much different from ranking exercise. Immediate boss has some input, and then everything is bounced 2-3 levels up the line for final decisions. Sponsors rescue their favorites, managers talk about old baggage for people that is totally unrelated to recent contributions in order to provide some reason to throw them to the bottom, etc. Few in the room know you unless you have been around a while with some exposure to senior management. Often one negative comment from anyone sinks you unless someone else speaks up to save you, which seldom happens. Disagreements are worked out on the sidelines. Usually involves I'll support X if you will support Y, and then I am ok with cutting Z. Fill the buckets and they get lunch.

Then HR and Legal run the disparate impact analyses and recommend necessary adjustments to get everything bullet proof in terms of diversity, discrimination, etc. A few tweaks are made and it's done.

Everyone has plausible deniability if they all keep quiet, which they do. You might be surprised at who sc--w*ed you. May be someone getting back at you for something that happened ages ago, not necessarily anyone in your direct line of reporting.

That's how EM bakes the cake.'

  • Good luck to all

How do you explain hard working employees getting PIPed and worthless do nothing popular employees not getting PIPed. I have seen the supervisors swoon over female employees. One popular employee played with his fish tank all day and sleep at his desk. When the supervisor came around he came alive. He talked about improving things and making changes. He never did anything even his normal work but the supervisor was impressed. My supervisor might say hello to me and that is all no talk about my family or anything personal. In contrast the supervisor has a lengthy conversation with his favorites. He talks to the favs about their kids, vacation plans, and hobbies. You can tell who he likes and dislikes. A person asked me what I would change to make exxon better. I told them if people were nicer to each other it would help.I also said to get rid of the favoritism by the supervisors. I did not know that the person asking me this was in good with our supervisor. When I saw their interactions I was shocked. I responded to a survey about favoritism and it was brought up by the supervisor. He was mad about it and dismissed the accusations. His actions were apparent though. He soon transferred after this because of the survey results. His favorites said the supervisor was the greatest they have had and they could not believe anyone would say this. I guess if you are protected you are safe no matter what.

OP provided an accurate description of how things really work behind closed doors in rating and ranking meetings.

@blr doesn’t really matter if it’s true or not. The fact is, a healthy % of employees believe it is true. The fact that the corporation is unable to convince the masses otherwise is a huge indictment against the culture and toxicity of the company.

The roll up process described is absolutely wrong. First hand knowledge. That is total uninformed BS.

Yes, that's exactly how I got booted out. It's a popularity contest.

More like sh-t sandwich.

Random comments from peanut gallery su---r punch you out of nowhere. Over delivered, met and exceeded all goals — should have been a stellar year, but … didn’t win popularity contest.

100% correct. People are so far up their ego, they are willing to interject and make negative comments about people they have no line of sight over. This is how it goes for the maniac supervisors / managers in the ranking meetings (especially in Controllers): I remember year 2002, he / she did not reply to my email within 5 minutes, how dare he / she ignores me for that long, don't they know who I am and how important I am? Let me sc--w them now by pushing their ranking as low as possible. These are the maniacs we work for!!!!

Yes. This is the way the cake is baked. I have both seen it and experienced it firsthand. Don’t pi-s off someone (even unintentionally) because you will drop like a rock in ranking and the cake may never rise again.

Always been that way, although it neglects the part about management folks giving each other handjobs when ranking is done.
