Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Some RTO questions that make you go hmmmmm

If being in the office co-located with your peers is so important, then why:

  1. is most of IT development now in India, which is by the way is over 5000 miles away, but also a totally different fkin timezone? Not to mention the culture and language barriers.
  1. is the executive team in NYC, far removed from San Francisco, you know, the corporate headquarters? "Thats outragious" -- Charlie Munger

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-12/munger-says-wells-fargo-ceo-scharf-ought-to-be-in-san-francisco

  1. are the corporate profits at multi-year highs DESPITE being RTO for more than a year?
  1. is Employee productivity higher now than pre-covid?
  1. are competitors like Deel, Barclays, and State Street embracing RTO as a permanent option for workers?
  1. are cities dying - in NYC businesses that survived on office staff buying products and services have long since closed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q53Wxx7aLrs
  1. are so many other corporations selling their prized big office towers in big cities?
  1. are more employees jumping ship for guaranteed remote jobs and moving to cheaper quieter rural towns to live?

RTO has 2 primary purposes: Forced attrition (you have to choose between your health and a job), and support the malinvestment of corporate realestate the bank has on its books.

RTO is going to happen. But that's not the issue. The issue is that some people really don't need to be in an office. I liked going in to the office for various reasons. But there was zero reason to be there since everybody I worked with was elsewhere. It's just the nature of the role I'm in.

2nd-- closing real estate: Several years ago the Phoenix area had something like 10,000 open seats for various reasons. Guess what, they closed down and consolidated buildings. Now with the new workplace standards, they're going to cram as many people into buildings as possible to further reduce real estate.

Real estate is typically one of the highest cost items of many companies.

All that said -- some of the "you must go into the office" is really short sighted and makes no sense to apply across the board.

Honestly, after working from home for close to a year and a half, I kind of am looking forward to being in the office again at least a few days a week. COVID aside of course.

People saw that life could go on without having to be a corporate slave for 40 hours a week. Good luck getting back to the way things were.

Face it, things are different now and the old ways are not going to be around much longer. The youngest boomers are turning 55 this year. Another decade and most of them will be gone from corporate leadership and we can finally bring business into the 21st century.

Stop making life be about enabling work and make work be about enabling life.

You seem to be unaware just how many buildings WF is selling or not extending leases in. It's a LOT, including 'office towers' in urban areas. Rest of the list may be valid, but WF is 100% onboard with #7. It's actually how CPG has justified it's existence for the last few years. Their #1 metric is buildings sold / closed / SQ ft reduction.

The fact that you took the time to compose the drivel probably means you have to much time on your hands. Use it to find another job.
