Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Layoffs by December

I’m middle management and got word from my manager that there will be layoffs of middle management (actually lower management SLS) by December. He gave me a heads up that I should be looking around as he can’t save his job or mine.

He said that ExxonMobil has decided that they need to cut costs further due to reduced driving, and reduced air travel in addition to the anticipated reduction in gas usage due to increased production of electric cars. He said that they had too many engineers quit and don’t need as many in middle management.

Anyone else hear anything about more layoffs? I started looking around as I don’t want to be the one to turn off the lights.

@1ydf+1cT3CPxs CSR is pretty much ingrained in EMRE. Coporate research is how they applease public image. Just like McCoy mentioned regarding CCS. It serves no function other than appleasement. Pilot, lube, and ASL/PTD don't offer much either and could easily get outsourced.

I would get rid of EMRE completed and move the surviving decent workers there to Houston.

Fake news. Let’s save our toxic middle managers and first of layoff even more toxic orgs like CSR in Clinton, NJ and half of the UIS orgs. Save us all be chipping off the worst first.

Spin off the corporation into two entities: "Contributors through Others" and Contributors. Then watch who competes to win.

I respectfully disagree. They need to ship these a-s clowns out all together. Even D-mb Darren doesn’t trust them anymore and that’s saying something. Most are rejects anyway that couldn’t be successful at anything else so they wound up in management. After a few years they get to thinking they are bulletproof and begin their toxic contributions. Not sure if it’s the clueless department heads or the mini me’s that follow them. I hope it’s true and I also hope they get my manager in the net. She is worthless and evil.

ExxonMobil should be moving managers into non-management positions to fill gaps. Honestly, don’t even think they’d be brave enough to do that. (

I think it is a troll also, but it sounds reasonable with oil prices up and XOM stock seems to be stuck in the 50’s. XOM needs to cut costs further. I have heard talk of “pushing decision making down”. Seems that with so many engineers a.k.a. individual contributors leaving, the only place left to cut are middle management a.k.a. the no contributors. Most middle managers are road blocks, the best ones are just speed bumps. Based on the reactions, it looks like a lot of middle managers are posting on this site. Has anyone experienced where a middle manager actually contributed anything to make the business better? Surely there are some. In your experience, what percentage of middle managers did something that made the business better?

Troll. If you knew anything at all about global demand and limitations of developing economies outside of Euro/US, you would understand that “Telsa” will not be the cause of layoffs anytime soon. EVs and alternative are great and much needed, but there is also reality to take into consideration. Frankly If, and I mean IF you are not a troll I’d be surprised and if you are an actual employee “given a heads up”, well your manager doesn’t know sht either. There are a couple small places where hydro carbons will contribute to be in demand, you may have heard or China, India, Africa, they are pretty big places with several people.
Perhaps you and your crusading manager could both get new jobs at The Gap or something. A more stable industry dealing in khakis and polos.

@OP If you’re middle-management then you’re a major part of the problem:

In U.S. companies there’s an average of one manager for every four contributors. On average, managers make up almost 20% of all employees and 30% of payroll in the U.S. The bloated management culture is costing companies an estimated $3.7T (yes, with a “T”) per year. This is a group of people that creates no value, degrades productivity, and demands high salaries.

If every company of any size cut the number of managers by 50% they would still be draining over $1.5T/year and they would still account for 15% of payroll. The word “bloated” doesn’t come anywhere close to describing waste and rot on this level.

I've been asking to be laid off but was told resolutely no, the company is in serious shortage of people. we'll see more engineers moving into commercial and finance functions

It makes so much sense that it can't be real. Otherwise, EM wouldn't be where it is now. LOL

I had not heard that but it seems to be the first place they should have cut last year. Sounds reasonable therefore probably will not happen. Most other companies cut there first and flatten the organization, so Exxon probably will not do that.

Sounds too good to be true, so it probably is. They could cut a third and I doubt I’d notice.

Troll.

EM processes don’t allow for off-cycle anything, much less layoffs. Having said that, it would be about damned time that people in these positions were fairly assessed against the rest of the technical population instead of being “deemed” into the top categories.

Good riddance to the brown nosing middle management layer. They add negative value for the organization anyway.

Troll. This is the best thing that EM can do but knowing how toxic and corrupt the org is, it will never fire the poisonous middle and lower management

If this is a true story and if your boss ever checks this site, it’s going to be pretty obvious to him that you are spreading this information on a public site. Whether or not he cares, idk. But it seems like a pretty specific situation to have happened that he/she would recognize it’s you who wrote this.

Sounds like they should have started with sls since that’s where the problem is. Not saying all are bad but within the gulf coast there’s plenty that should not be there to begin with. Hopefully my manager is in the lot! Finally something positive! More engineers will be leaving also. This is just the top of the iceberg
