When to take PIL?

I got NI and I’m under 5 years. I have no intention on taking the PIP. I just found out. Should I take PIL today or should I wait until my 7 days are over?

Good question - the answer depends on if you have another job lined up. If you take the PIP or the PIL either way you get three months of pay. The most important thing here is that the assessment is your performance relative to your peers. The PIP is a relative assessment against a plan that your supervisor develops - do the PIP, meet all the outlined deliverables, be the first to work, the last to leave, and document everything via email (i.e. you will have weekly meetings with your supervisor, document in email what was discussed and agreed upon - print for your CYA folder). Once you beat the PIP (and you will if you do as outlined above), you just bought yourself a year to find a new job with a salary and benefits.

Bottom line - don't take the PIL unless you already have a new job - easier to find a job when you have a job.

Former Employee @1xqe+1c4r6a4G - that's not how assessment works anymore. Your info is not correct - no "points" in the assessment anymore. I know of at least three people who survived PIP last year who ended up in the middle of the assessment list this year (I.e. a number of buckets above NSI).

OP: Make sure you don't wait too long - if you miss the deadline you go to immediate PIP option.

@1dpf+1c4r6a4G Your information is incorrect. NI at less than five years has either option. If they are under 50 they get seven days to the side, if they are over 50 they get 21 days to decide.

I would take the PIP and make your supervisor work. PIPs are punishing for superviosrs because of the documentation requirements. Write everything down. Use the time to look for a new job. If you survive Pip, keep looking for a job, your future is dim.

Former employee here - a bad rank early is a career ender, even in the best of times. The amount of rank points it takes to a supervisor to take from someone else to move you up a bucket pretty much assures it’s not going to happen. Take the PIL and go somewhere better

Relying on your predecessor too much is the weirdest BS excuse that I’ve ever heard. 90% of the “training program” is relying on your predecessor. The other 10% is random sharepoint videos and maybe a training session with contractors if your department is valued enough. I hate it here.

Do not burn bridges with your manager and his manager unless you already have a new job lined up. Remember you will rely on them for a "favorable" recommendation if you are still looking for a new job.

Take the PIL and drag out any decisions for as long as you can. For a laugh, you could ask your boss to prepare an outline of your proposed PIP. It depends how much you respect him/her.

Do NOT give the PIP serious consideration, no matter what your boss says. Being NI’d at 5 years and PIP’d will always stay on your record with the company. It won’t matter that you and your supervisor (and maybe even his/her manager) know that you didn’t deserve it. Your NI and PIP will always be used in future ranking decisions and it will be used to limit any promotion or assignment opportunities. And that’s if you even get through the PIP AND the next ranking cycle. Honestly, it would be the same as having a target on your back.

Finally, can you even live with the insult that the company (through your managers) has delivered to you. Either you’re no good enough, or you are good enough but they still want to get rid of you under the guise of “Poor Performance”. Turn your back on the company and show them that you’re better than that and you’re the one who doesn’t need them !

I was pipped, but it was a joke. Everyone around me knows that. My supervisor is encouraging me to take the PIP since he needs me and knows it was not deserved. It is a difficult decision to make. I am very tempted to leave after this humiliating treatment.

They offer PIPs and PILs to NI (Needs Improvement) now? Thought it was NSI (Needs Significant Improvement). That’s how it was last year.

And only 7 days to decide? I had 3 weeks to decide last year.

It’s simply a layoff. Just take the PIL and move on with your life.

I’m the one PIP at 6 months. Not to mention I recovered $150k for the company in overpayments. This company is a joke.

I got PIPed after 6 months with the company. They said I relied to much on my predecessor and paid too much attention to detail (controllers). My predecessor was the only training that I got and they were only here for three months. They’ll say anything to justify PIP when in reality they over hired and are disgusting this layoff to ship our jobs to BA. My supervisor said there’s nothing he can do and was near tears. He can save it. I’m out of here.

I got pipped too. Utterly ridiculous. I run circles around at least a few others in my group who ranked higher. Management is clueless about what happens in the trenches.

Wait the seven days since you will be one weeks salary richer. You will essentially be on "vacation" for 7 days if you decide on Day 1 to take the PIL on Day 7.

The up to 7 days grace period is for legal reasons.

I’m not taking the PIP. I’ve done great work and my supervisor admitted he didn’t agree with the decision. I’m not appreciated and taking my many talents elsewhere.
