Leaving the industry

I'm at the point where I'm not only ready to leave XOM but the entire industry. Let's face it, working in O&G was never a cakewalk but the industry has been especially brutal for employees in the past decade or so. Just going to another O&G company wouldn't change anything. This requires a more drastic change and I think I'm finally ready to make it.

This might be wise. All indications are that the market is soft with weakening margins. It'll probably be 5-10 years before this dynamic changes. There's some conflict between derivatives and diverging arbitrage values. There's many mixed signals in the market now.

In this day and age you need to have skills and abilities that can be applied across multiple industries because the world is much more dynamic and quicker changing that it has ever been. The days of belonging to one company let alone one industry are sadly in the past.

You and many others have come to this conclusion. Management is clueless because they have only been on the receiving end of raises, promotions and opportunities which is not the experience the majority of the workforce have had. Answers to questions about compelling case for remaining in industry fell flat in forum yesterday because of this. Management lacks awareness they have the silver spoon in hand and don’t know what majority of us experience.
