I was laid off last month when I was negative on PTO. Now I received a letter in the mail from repayment saying I owe them about 2k in PTO overusage. I’ve heard from previous employees that they try to scare you to pay it back but don’t have much legal recourse to take me to collections. Every time I call them they just tell me to repay it or I won’t be eligible for rehire. What should I do?

Honest people would return money that is not theirs. Dishonest people would not. As simple as that.
If you owe it, pay it back. I'm sure if they had made a mistake that benefitted the bank and you called them on it they'd correct it.
OP had no idea if/when this was coming.
The final check mistake is WF's.
A bank who’s name is synonymous with fraud and scandal says they won’t rehire you because they screwed up - that’s a threat I would be willing to live with.

Ha! Wells Fargo couldn’t manage to get your final check correct? They had all the information available to them and they still couldn’t manage to get it right. I wouldn’t want to be eligible for rehire and would tell them to go F themselves.
@end+1bcC2j7a .... You speak of Burning Bridges. You got to be joking. This place has burned its bridges with so many good current and former employees through so many reasons. You speak as if this is some one sided relationship. No, it's a two way relationship and all one has to do is read a lot of the comments on this thread to see that the only people burning bridges is the employer.
If you are entitled to any severance they will just take it out of that. The minimum severance is 6 weeks, so how could you owe them anything?
Take the letter and use it to wipe your azz, then send the letter back in the mail. You owe them nothing. How ridiculous when all these execs got away with millions in 2016 and 2017 after the fake accounts scandal. Being Uneligible for rehire from a place who laid you off should be a badge of honor. Run!
who would want to work in this dump again? Tell them to hit the road, they can take this cr-p job and shove it
Dead wood overused his vacation, got laid off and not paying back money. Sounds like a great plan for dead wood.
I once gave notice to an employer 2 weeks but the employer I was going to wanted me to start 3 days sooner as they had a training session stating. So my notice was 3 days shy of 2 weeks. They held it against me and it had been 15 years they still will not rehire me. My point is you Never know when you will want or need to go back to an old employer so Don't Burn your Bridges. Pay the money back or face the consequences. I learned the hard way.
golden parachutes are legal contracts. If OP has the same contract for his vacation then he does not have to pay back
@OP. You thought you can just take as much vacation as possible and get away with it if you get laid off didn’t you?
pay it back. SR executives that looked the other way on the scandal walk away with Golden parachutes and set for life. But you however, you peasant, should pay back that 2k you owe the company. Ramifications are intended for the worker bees, not the queen bees.
Like money don’t spend what you don’t have. Be responsible and pay them back! It is a good lesson you need to learn
You took time off and got paid while you didn’t earn it. It’s borrowing time and get paid. Of course you have to pay them back especially if you want to rehire. Who wants to rehire a deadbeat
