No laptops -- now Virtual Desktop Interface (VDI)

So we're all headed back to offices (insert pandemic laughing). And now WF is eliminating laptops for employees, instead moving to VDI.

Question: If we're in meetings away from our workstations, how do we take notes on non-existent laptops? Do we go back to manual notetaking?

Before someone says it's not a big deal, it is for certain roles. Much more efficient to take notes on laptop, with ability to disseminate information quickly.

And VDI means that if you're ever lucky enough to be able to WFH limited days, you'll have to use your own personal laptop to use VDI. So we'll basically have to buy inexpensive "burner" laptops, since noone trusts that WF won't tap into our primary personal laptops.

Is VDI just a cost-cutting measure or another strategic stick to make work more painful so people quit?

(And, yes, we all know some other companies use VDI. Motivation seems a bit suspect at WF.)

JFC. How much sh*t are we supposed to take??? I take all my meeting notes on my laptop -- it has been encouraged for years.

No fvcking laptops is a complete joke. They want WFH to be impossible. Now.we'll have to pay for our own laptops to access VDI from home???

Yes, eliminating laptops for all employees. Eliminates risk and reduces costs. VDI for everyone, except execs.

I was thinking more along the lines of multitasking perf, but if they wanna throttle access to work stuff, ok. Either way I don't need to put up with cr-p hardware.

I have bad news for you. Your PC setup has no effect on the performance of the VDI. VDI's have different subscription levels on how many virtual cores, RAM and disk space you are allocated.

The performance is not good.

Lesson: don't work for a big bank.

At BoA they had “loaners” but honestly they recommended using old school pen and paper. Productivity takes a hit for sure.

This is the Chase model. Easier to patch at the hyoervisor than the end points and it eliminates users' ability to save anything locally - minimizing information leaks.

There's benefits to VDI when it comes to info security. Laptops are already pretty locked down, but not as much as VDI would be. Anyway, I look forward to it. I plan on building a purpose built desktop for this. I'll be able to control it, fix things without consulting India, and it won't be a slow tu-d like the laptops we are issued now.

It is one more way to treat everyone like Shi! and limit your mobility to the office. It is all by design. They want to find anyway they can to make employees lives' so miserable. SC-M!
