Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Is it worth it

I work way more than 40 hours a week. No chance I will ever have a sponsor as I am too old for that now. I work and don’t have time for exercise or my kids as I am so afraid of being PIPd. I feel like my blood pressure is going up up up. Only thing I can think of is to max out my life insurance and wait to die at my desk of a heart attack. I feel trapped.

OP, please take care of your health. May things get better for you.

@1ssk+1bI6UfrE I second this. Leaving office at 7 PM is considered hardworking at other sites, meanwhile Singapore employees often work until late night and even weekend (this was even pre-Covid). Bosses are normalized with this long hours culture as well, sending emails during public holidays and weekends, they don't care engineers having burnout as long jobs get done smh

You guys expectation of work is 40 hours a week? In EM sg, PE work 60- 70 hours as baseline....

Hard work is a masculine trait? Woooowwww. I dare you to tell your wife or daughter that to their face.

Quick note - dieing at the desk does NOT get an increased payout.
A guy where I worked had heart attack on the company terlet.
Took jaws of life to claw him out with rigor mortis.
Wasn't declared 'dead' until the ambulance was 10 miles down the road.

Stay hydrated - and get out of this terlet!

Please don't sacrifice your health. I was completely overworked and then experienced irreversible health damage. I can tell you that it was not worth it. There are no dollars that can buy your health. Especially not worth it at a company that could lay you off or PIP you very soon regardless of your contributions. Please stand up for yourself and spread the word that it is not worth it.

They aren’t inherently male but they are inherently masculine traits. And they predict success in the workplace. The psychological literature on this stuff is crystal clear, guys, go read it. Successful women in business carry and execute on these traits.

I agree with @hyd that the automatic gendering of OP as male is a symptom of a larger problem in this company. Just today I was lamenting to a colleague that “the intern my team had last year was a rockstar and we wish we could have extended an offer, but ya know, 2020 and covid.” Colleague asked “where did HE ultimately end up?”

She. Our intern was a young lady.

When we ascribe working long hours, wholehearted dedication to the job, and other similar behaviors as inherently male, we hold women back. I’m sure plenty of sexist boomers will downvote this post, but it’s only because they don’t want to admit they’re part of the problem. Sigh.

It's more just intuition. Women, in general, are MUCH better stress managers than men are. They will take care of themselves, consult with friends and family, go to therapy, and are often fulfilled by things in their lives outside of the office (we guys have a real problem with this one).

Read up on the biological differences in personality between men and women and how they manifest in the workplace, it's pretty fascinating stuff.

Off topic, but I find it interesting that even though OP’s post was not gendered, some replies assumed OP is male. I’m not looking for a fight; I’m just highlighting this as an evidence that maybe there IS some implicit bias among us. Food for thought.

Skip work, go fishing. Now bring raw fish into cubicle and start cleaning it, throwing the guts around. You will be surprised how "Bob" will reward your efforts.

I second "stop caring so much". Watch Office Space and start acting more like Peter after the hypnosis. Less stress and there's a fair chance your rank will improve. Worked for me, seriously. Also working toward financial independence and saving up a $1M+ portfolio before age 40 helps.

Control the controllables and let the rest go. No matter the outcome, it's not worth it.

What those guys said below. I've seen plenty of folks PIP'd and laid off at this point. Reality is you don't have that much control over whether they PIP you. You can work 80 hour weeks, be super productive, super stressed, and still get ranked low or PIP'd because of some managers opinion. You can half @ss your work, pull half days, and still get ranked really well. Our performance management system is bad.

So rather than sacrifice your mental and physical health to try to control an outcome you really can't control, focus on what you can control: You can to some extent control how much you spend and how much you save and invest right now for a rainy day. You can control if your resume is up to date. You can have a back up plan in place if you do lose your job. You can learn marketable skills and build your network in your field. And you can decide how many hours and how much stress your current job is really worth. Good chance it's not worth sacrificing your health or relationship with your family is you really think about it. Good luck!

Same boat bud but it's not worth it. Live humbly and cut expenses for a while. Save an emergency fund. My friends and I joke about working at home depot as a backup if it all goes south. Care less about work. Work your full day and nothing more. Turn off and spend time with the family. Your family loves and needs their dad more than his exxon paycheck!!!

@obq+1bI6UfrE not trolling sharing how I honestly feel

I don't know if you’re trolling or not, but if you aren’t, simply stop caring so much about work. Instead of worrying about getting PIPed or laid off, think that if it does happen, the company can f*k off anyway. Until then, collect your large paycheck and save/invest it responsibly.
