Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Why are so many Oracle employees so bitter?

I understand being mad at the company, I hate the constant layoffs as much as anybody else. But there's a line between being upset over something and being so bitter that it takes over your life. I honestly think that people who have reached that stage should be leaving of their own free will. Working for a company you detest so much is not good for your health.

Yes, it was quite curious when O hired MH. He had a terrible reputation, and had been fired from HP. Accused of se-ual harassment. Spy scandal. I was new at O at the time, and I was frankly, horrified. It was a red flag, and it never got better.

I was working at HP when Mark Terd left and went to Oracle. People were happy and relieved. He ruined that company by dramatically accelerating its decline for his own personal enrichment.

Then he did the same thing at Oracle. The only reason that he didn’t utter ruin Oracle to the extent that he did HP was that Safra and to a small extent Larry served as a counterbalance, but only just so.

No one at Oracle shed a tear when he passed on. Many rejoiced, albeit privately. Mark Terd was not a good man. He was a greedy man who knew how to work the system and work Wall Street to enrich himself at the expense of everyone around him and the companies he managed (NCR, HP, Oracle).

Terd will never go down in the annals of business history as anything other than an example of how a greedy, non-visionary spreadsheet numbers manager can single-handedly destroy companies and tens if not hundreds of thousands of employees and their families lives.

All in the name of maximizing his own compensation and financial position. And for what — he’s not even around to enjoy it.

Karma.

I don’t think people are bitter. I think it’s ok to be angry at your employer for treating you bad. I mean. Your employer. You spend 8 hours a day with. You go back and forth with the employer. It’s a relationship. Relationships sometimes go down a bad path. I’ve said it many many times here. I’ve been here 15 years and never heard anyone say “I like what I do or I like where I work”. I have heard colleagues across every industry say one or the other.

When you open your mind up, realize it’s just a paycheck, use your time to find other things to learn or like me, other revenue streams Oracle will never find out about, you look at your Oracle mgrs, the kings and queens of the units, and you laugh. Their legacy will be a waste cause they will have said “I put in so much time and all I got was this gold pen?”. They will fall and fall much harder than the worker bees.

And no one is mad that MH passed on. I’m human but that dude ruined many a life.

“ complained in all employee meetings that Support revenue was greater than Licensing revenue ”

Most sane company managers would be fine with that, or wouldn’t set up a situation where these revenue streams are at odds.

As a support old timer myself, I got a well known secret for MH and his ilk. Support revenue usually does at least approach or exceed sales revenue in most tech places I’ve worked. IT IS NOT A PROBLEM!

Old timers, particularly in Support, are bitter because they remember back in the day when they were valued and treated like they mattered. I blame MH, God rest his soul, when he complained in all employee meetings that Support revenue was greater than Licensing revenue and he wanted to flip that. That's about when things turned sour.

Oracle has a horrible reputation with ex-employees as well as customers. When people feel abused, yes, they are bitter.

Why are so many Oracle employees so bitter?

Because they’re losers. Blaming others for one’s own shortcomings and failings is one of the classic loser behavior pattern.

Because they sold all their Oracle stock when it was in the 30s not too long ago.

Why are so many Oracle employees so bitter?

Because they have very low self esteem. They know they should have left the company long ago, but waited too long. As a result they now realize they have become low-value members of the workforce and their shame and embarrassment manifests as bitterness.

If what happened to me had happened to you, you would be bitter also.

The bitter ones are the most vocal (of course), and because they have lost whatever marketability they may have had since joining. It's much easier to blame others than to look in the mirror and accept one's own failures.

In the apps org it's very different, since the apps team understands their market and is competitive. But in tech, the employees who remain are mostly folks who thought they were in a big company where they could coast, but now are bitter because they've discovered that's not the case after all. Everyone else with any skill/savvy/initiative has already long since left.

I am not bitter. It may be your role / division. I am an apps SE have have enjoyed my job and have been well compensated over the last two decades. Of course, my compensation is based on sales performance, but not as much as a sales rep's.

Things may be different in tech, oci, development, etc.
