Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Our store manager just quit

She is one of the few managers worth their salt, so to say I hate to see her go would be an understatement. I'm also petrified about our future. I've read horror stories here about other stores and their SMs, and I have no idea who's going to replace her in two weeks. I'm worried the atmosphere in our relatively pleasant store is about to take a negative turn.

We love executive turnover, the company has recently downgraded positions and titles (just ask anybody on the Visual team) and whenever a store manager or lower level leader leaves the company we are able to hire in someone at the new much lower in-hire rates. Turnover at both hourly and salary levels is spiking as the economy reopens and senior leadership has a mission to reduce overall selling costs. As store volumes have decreased post pandemic we have to find a way to offset our high labor costs. Working at Macy's in stores isn't rocket science, if you don't like it, there are other jobs out there, go find one.

Ten years ago, Macy's was still a growing brand where young business, marketing, and retail executives would aspire to work as the company offered an abundance of future growth and developmental opportunities. Fast forward a decade and the company has moved from growth to downsizing. In business, you're either growing or you're dying and Macy's is not growing.

In an effort to give the appearance that there are still opportunities for leaders in the early and middle stages of their careers, there is a lot of forced turnover of tenured people at the Store Manager level in order to allow for some upward mobility., so we are seeing more resignations than we have in the past. The problem is that all when tenured store managers are resigning, we can't find anyone qualified to relocate so we are promoting lower level leaders like OVM's into STM roles as long as they are willing to relocate. We no longer have a talent bench and everyone lies about being relocatable until actually asked to do so, who wants to move for a company that is continually closing stores and eliminating jobs.

@1rss+1b3RIPiF This is just the most bizzare comment and non-sequitor about a situation that you have zero control over. What does being a social justice warrior have to do with the success of your store or any other in this company? Just strange.

Coo is being axed in aug he ran all the stores ( or did he ). They are closing 45 stores. Sales aren’t great. , everyone is being worked to death. Here’s my take. I think they are going to cut all of the store managers and possibly OVm. The memo was leaked and that’s why store managers are bailing. I think it will hap either by aug or feb 2022.

In a 16 month span we have had 4 store managers. It’s been a rotating building with not one staying long enough to get to know or build bonds or trusting relationship with red badges to selling colleagues.

Very eye opening post below...the latest one is mid 30s with agenda like outlined below. Same description...

Well, you might have a problem if all the managers start wearing armbands with a big red star and start the morning rally by singing praises to the "M". Each colleague is issued a handbook with quotes from the Chairman. Yup, then you would have a problem.

I know 2 OVMS and 1 store manager that have quit now in the last month or so. All 3 of them have been with the company since the 90s. So makes me wonder what's going to happen, or of they all were just truly fed up.

We got a new store mgr a few months ago, mid 30's with a chip on her shoulder and intent on cleaning out the older sales managers. Just wait and see who you get, it will be someone younger with a social justice agenda, too.
