Thread regarding Verizon Wireless layoffs

Poll: why do you stay?

Nobody likes working at VW these days. So why don't you leave? What's the main thing keeping you here? I know for some people it's health insurance most likely, but are there any other reasons that are keeping you tied to the place you hate? I'm genuinely interested in finding out what they are.

I stay because I don't really have any true skills outside of retail. I been with the company for 12 years and it's the only thing I know. The pay, the benefits, the 401k all are great. As much as I've tried and looked I can't find something that's close to what I get now. My family depends on my income and benefits. Yes it's less and less every year but at least it's consistent and there isn't a fear of me losing my job. At least not of now there isn't.

Been here for 10 years. I have had 5 positions and two within leadership. I have doubled my base salary. The benefits are very good and the 401k is amazing compared to the other companies. The opportunities are there. You have to get out of retail. You might have to take a pay cut but you will gain so much more skills, title, and opportunities. This is still a very good company to work for. VZ has a lot of complexities and opportunities, but chance to do do something different isn’t one of them. Ask someone who got out from Retail and see where they are at internally and externally. You will be amazed! Don’t sell yourself short.

I'm glad to be employed. I have no family. If I lost my job during the pandemic I'd have been homeless by now. Working in VZ destroyed my soul until I switched teams. People may have unliked my previous comment, but honestly unless you're debt free and have over a 1 year emergency fund. You have no place to judge. I'm newly out of college. The fact that I kept my job and the team I'm on has been so much better than my last one. A good manager and leadership makes all the difference. It's unfortunate that it's not the same throughout the whole company, but hopefully that will change.

“Newer employees or ones who barely made quota on the old plan don’t mind the team commission because they don’t miss what they never had. “

This statement is 100% accurate and sums up a decent percentage of current reps. Kudos to whomever said this.

I have student loans and a car to pay off. Everywhere is having hiring freezes. I'm just glad to be employed. Have been using the pandemic and forbearance to pay of things. I used to be here because I had to. I'm thankful to be here. The benefits are good. Its easy to make a big company small than a small company big. Once my debts are paid off I can really get the ball rolling to take advantage of our benefits even more.

Only for the benefits and haven't found a job that is better. It's crazy when someone tells me to get over it but then I remember the same people saying I should never settle... Verizon has pushed us in a very uncomfortable situation and I'm trying to find a way out and have the same benefits as before. I just feel really bad, the kids growing up in this country not realizing how much they will not get from their employer. This country is really let the working class down...

I didn’t stay. I resigned after the better part of a decade, and haven’t looked back (other than to check on this board occasionally).

I hope it gets better for you guys. You have more marketable skills than you realize, even without a degree.

For me its the benefits and lack of skills, also the pay I've been with Verizon for 12 years now, I used to love it here up until 2019 it just went downhill from there . However if I quit it will be hard to find a job that pays the same and give me the same benefits, so I'm just here now getting by offering the minimul to customers just to get by, before I would give it my 100% now it's just 10%

Using this time to do some in depth searching to make sure the next organization I work with and job I take is a great fit.

That said, many of us would have moved on before now had we been further along in the COVID recovery.

if thats the case for you all, why dont all try something different. different meaning, if what ever it is thats keeping you there, shouldn't you try to improve things until its your time to leave. why sit on your hands so to speak and allow management and high ups to dictate and make changes that affect you all drastically. you think they care when these changes occur or implement these changes. most of these changes aren't in your best interest. you say to yourself im tired of all this bullsh*t that the company/management is doing, im depressed, im waiting for a package, I have no skills for other jobs etc etc.. while you are THERE why dont y'all join together and take action and fight the boss back on the things that affect you all the most, and fight back to improve the things you dont like, that the company is doing. action taken by 2 or more co workers is considered CONCERTED ACTIVITY which is protected under FEDERAL LABOR LAW- which means that it is illegal for a company to retaliate against workers taking such action. I say that to say this, if you are unhappy with where you work because of the conditions but something is keeping you there, what ever it is. you have tried not saying or doing anything about the conditions you work under. not saying anything isn't working out, its telling the company that what-ever they are doing IS OK. I suggest an alternative option. Although you dont need a union to organize and take action against management, forming one would certainly help make some changes that you all deem fit in your best interest. dont know how to get started go to https://verizonworkers.org and get involved.

[You have the right to act with co-workers to address work-related issues in many ways. Examples include: talking with one or more co-workers about your wages and benefits or other working conditions, circulating a petition asking for better hours, participating in a concerted refusal to work in unsafe conditions, openly talking about your pay and benefits, and joining with co-workers to talk directly to your employer, to a government agency, or to the media about problems in your workplace. Your employer cannot discharge, discipline, or threaten you for, or coercively question you about, this "protected concerted" activity. A single employee may also engage in protected concerted activity if he or she is acting on the authority of other employees, bringing group complaints to the employer's attention, trying to induce group action, or seeking to prepare for group action. However, you can lose protection by saying or doing something egregiously offensive or knowingly and maliciously false, or by publicly disparaging your employer's products or services without relating your complaints to any labor controversy].

Spite, I know they don’t want me here so I stay and let the 32 hour people know how much they got screwed in pay. Keep them informed, they shouldn’t be happy out of ignorance.

I stay because I don't really have any true skills where I can make as much as I once did. Even though we keep getting less I possess no skills to get me equivalent or better pay .......And by skills I mean a degree basically

I think a lot of people like me stay because we are waiting for a VSP. I know many reps stay because in the grand scheme of things the pay and benefits are above average. It’s not a tough job by any means and most reps are making 18–25 an hour plus the team commission. The biggest obstacle to overcome is the bitterness towards the new commission pay structure. The last several months was tolerable but now it seems the company wants us to sell like we are back on individual commission. That is a tall task when the money is nowhere near the same. Newer employees or ones who barely made quota on the old plan don’t mind the team commission because they don’t miss what they never had. I think Verizon would be very smart to offer a one time VSP so those still bitter can finally move on. I kind of feel like this should be an obligation based on the drastic income reduction for some.

I had a hard time with this one but its the benefits, my soul is crushed every day and every hour minute and second I am logged in and working, lately this horror consumes my time off. I am basically a pr–––––––e at this point. I am trying to post out and apply for new jobs outside the company, for now I am stuck and in a deep depression over it.
