Saturday Observations

Disclaimer: Don't work for Macy's.

St. Louis area this past Saturday, rainy day, but fairly nice temps. Midrivers Mall, a B class mall located in the suburbs, that seems to be holding its own for the most part - time will tell, though the pandemic has definitely hurt it. Area all around mall is really booming, though. JC Penney, Macy's and Dillard's are the traditional anchors.

Walk into Dillard's - 11AM (store opening). Place is busy. Good selection of merchandise. Lots of summer apparel and home goods on display. Good number of associates helping people. Was asked at least twice if I needed any help. Huge selection of men's cosmetics, including beard care. Ended up spending a little over $110 on items.

Walked down to Macy's - First impression was "is this store open?" No associates to be seen, but that is OK because there are no customers either. Walk through the home goods area - practically bare. What they do have is the absolute basic of the basic. Finally see someone working furniture. Go upstairs and a few customers about, but nowhere as busy as Dillard's. A mixture of merchandise, but sparse. Very little summer apparel for men. Men's cosmetics was non existent. At no time during my visit was I approached and asked if I needed assistance. Saw two associates, and a few cosmetics people, during my entire trip. Left without spending any money.

Take it as you will - observations from "America" as it were.

If you have to go to a mall to get your daily contact with other people, you need to get out of your mom's basement. Maybe when the Macy's employees see you coming they run for cover.

@OP you forgot to add a disclaimer that you need a life. Any guy that goes to a mall at opening time on a rainy Saturday to analyze the selection in "men's cosmetics" has no life.

macys customers are ghetto! most of them are up to no good. shop lifting has become a crisis for sure, and they love to fire any employeee who cares too much about it! oh, and shall we address the fact that dressing rooms are used as bathrooms and for se-ual encounters! we had someone pi-s in the elevator as well. What the he-l is wrong with people? Avoid at all cost, it is neither a safe or sanitary place.

B class mall is for the colored people.

You are showing your bias, it's very obvious. So in a B class mall you observe Dillard's very busy at opening time then later go to Macy's and it's empty? Something doesn't add up. It would be more believable if you were in a dead mall but not a B class mall.

Someone asked for a recap of Penney's - they had a decent selection, though the shoe department was "light". Plenty of employees. Very nice curtain and blind section - had some recent rework of that area, and increased the selection. Looked nice. I spent $20 on a pair of shorts, checkout was efficient and the lady working blinds/curtains was really nice.

Nah, I don't have too much time on my hands. I have cold, hard cash to spend - and apparently Macy's doesn't want it. Judging by your attitude - I see why Macy's is in the shape it is in. You obviously don't want me shopping there, and that is fine. Judging by the lack of customers in the store compared to Dillard's I'd say "we the customers" have already received the hint and are taking our money elsewhere.

Bottom line is, I felt welcomed in Dillard's and they had selection - stuff I wanted, items that interested me. Macy's made me feel unwelcome, looked like a going out of business K-Mart, and had no selection. I won't miss the place.

Yep he’s spot on. Walk in most Macy’s and what he experienced is correct.

Dillard's isnt commissioned but the pay is based on how much you sell. So that is a difference in how the sales people work...

Well Dillard's don't have a Fulfillment team that takes all the merchandise selections.

He gave an honest observation, why dog him about it? And he's right. He spent his money where he found service and selection. That's how it's supposed to be!

While I do think some customers expect to be led by the hand and their shopping done for them, there are shoppers who may just need a little help now and then, and others who need no help at all. But every shopper expects, rightly so, to find someone to take their money when it's time to pay.

You have to much time on your hands....you sound like the kind of customer that needs to have someone take them by the hand and walk them around the store....no friends . Looking for human interaction....tomorrow you can return what you bought....
