Thread regarding Verizon Wireless layoffs

Part Time Transition

So part time sounds very interesting but after speaking with a few people it sounds like they can still schedule you 5 days a week and keep you under 32 hours... sounds like a great option for me if it’s guaranteed 4 days a week 9 hour shifts like we’re scheduled now, but it makes no sense to me if they can still schedule us 5 days a week. Has anyone heard anything about them still scheduling 5 days a week just reduced hours during those days.

I went part time back in October and I have only worked 4 days a week with the option to pick up extra shifts. I have not been forced to work more than my scheduled hours so far. Management has asked me if I would like to pick up extra hours. I guess it just depends on your management team. Going part time was the best thing I could’ve done.

Sooooo shady, but not surprising. I remember when they first gave us the option they advertised how great it would be to have a 3rd day off in the week and move to part time so you can focus on your side hustle. And now they are saying if we go to 32 hours we could still be scheduled 5 days.... DO NOT go part time if you’re expecting an extra day off unless you get it in writing because you will work 5 days.

If they make us move to 32 hours and start making us work 5 days I would jump on that union band wagon in a heart beat and pay that $10 a week to keep me at 4 days a week. No way am I going to drive 40 minutes a day and back for 6 1/2 hours. Plus once they move everyone to part time, then they can raise our insurance and take more from us. So I hope they read this and understand that of they move us to part time a start screwing us more than they have, union is the way we will go. Very fast

I can see very few circumstances when a rep would be willing to take on the 32 hour part time gig over the 40 hour one. If there was no guarantee of a four day work week then it makes zero sense. Verizon makes it very clear that it is a voluntary option which basically means that someday it will not be voluntary. I’m praying that when it becomes a mandatory change they offer a severance to leave because I will be first in line.

I went 32 hours. In the job description it said they won't schedule me more than 4 days unless there's a business need, but if I'm working 5 days it's 40 hours. They "can't" do 5 days at 32 hours unless it's voluntary. It's a 32-40 hour deal. If you're scheduled 5 days and 32 hours and it's not voluntary. Contact HR. We're not union. So, there's no legally contracted job descriptions. That's one thing you get with a union. Contracted job descriptions saying what they can and can't make you do.

I'm at the point where I wasn't so sure on a union, but if a vote came to me. I'd vote, yes.
Yeah, they won't bargain commission structure, but they will bargain Job descriptions, regular pay increases and benefits.

I hear AT&T's top rate is $24+ (orange contract) per hour and individual commissions with an at risk of 1400ish.
I know I'd consider switching if a spot came open near me, but prefer to not start over somewhere else.

You will 100% work 5 days a week. It's a trap.

If you want no severance if they decide to do a closure, then sure go part time.

Otherwise its just a Verizon tacktic to save them more money.

Less $ going into 401k, unless you are well off which you cant be if you are working at vzw, just continue working.

They can't fire people as most stores are understaffed anyways.

I hope they get tanked bad on their next pulse survey. They say it 'reflects' on the GM well BS your treatment of employees has gone to garbage.

Sounds like Verizon is once again making something sound like a “great opportunity” for employees when in reality it gives them the same control while paying us less and giving us no time back.

Yup our part timer was told she would have to start working 5 days. Dispite her moving down to have the 3rd day off for child care.

Yup they are doing it now to the part timers and phrasing it as it's only a temporary change, three part timers in my store all work five days a week
