As recent as a few years ago, anytime Sears or Kmart were closing a bunch of stores, you could tune in to your favorite channel for news and catch a blip mentioning Sears Kmart closing more stores again. Lately it seems like you have to really do some searching to find out what is closing and many people already think Kmart and Sears are gone for good.
With that said, will the final round of closings get any special media coverage? Or does nobody even care about these companies anymore?
The number of remaining Sears and Kmart stores in the US makes the chain virtually dead. It cannot be that any of these remaining stores are throwing off positive cash flows, especially when no one in their right minds will ship them any merchandise.
As long as Eddie can find new and creative ways to lose other people's money there won't be a final round.
Guess what? Even before stores were closing I knew of many people that didn’t even know if Sears or Kmart still existed. I thought they were in their own bubble. But the reality was that customers left both companies many years before that and never came back. And why should they? They had newer big box and retailers to choose from.
I was the one in the bubble and after reading comments on this sight this past 2 years, I wasn’t the only one.
Most Kmarts were in dying neighborhoods and most Sears were in back of dying Malls.

Agree with no. Same in my area. As late as 2018, a store closing might make the news but when a bankrupt company closes stores, it is noteworthy? Even if the bankruptcy was Transformed? Too few stores around for people to care and even the Die Hard have adjusted their shopping habits.

At one time there were 8 Sears stores in my area. When the last couple of them closed, it didn't even make the local news. It doesn't make any difference to the general public. But as suggested by others, I'm sure there will be a few nostalgia news pieces when the final store closing happens. It will be like the death of a 100 year old celebrity who hasn't made a public appearance in the past 20 years.
Sears and Kmart are irrelevant now. Nobody cares anymore.
I’d suspect it will only be covered in the same way the last remaining Blockbuster Video is covered. A whole bunch of “remember when?”, and “It was a pioneer during its day” type things. At this point the impact on the jobs numbers and the consumer is pretty much zero (sad to say)

When the very last stores close, there will be some "sad ending of an American Icon" type stories on the news. If you're of a certain age, you'll remember just how dominant Sears and Kmart were, and Sears was vitally important to rural areas during the 20th century.
But it'll be "not with a bang, but with a whimper" when it all finally ends.
