Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

AAAGH! What do I do without my gasoline and diesel?

Only been a few days, but people all along the east coast are screaming and freaking about fuel shortages. Why aren’t they celebrating? Isn’t elimination of fossil fuels what “everybody” wants? That’s what we hear 24/7. Wait another couple of days and prices will climb nationwide. Another week and shortages of all kinds everywhere if The Old Colonel stays down.

Good test for the O&G industry haters. Plug in those EVs, until diesel shortages hit those power plants. Enjoy and filler up if you can. This is the future.

I said SET UP. Meaning overpriced car (the delta between ICE and EV), power wall and the largest expense, solar panels. Hopefully you aren’t in a planning department guiding investment decisions.

Let me do the math for you smooth brain:
$20k delta, $20k power wall, $40k solar panels=$80k
$80k of $3 gasoline = 26,666 gal
25 mpg * 26,666 gal = 666,667 miles
12,000 miles per year (that is generous considering you only drive 12k during working years) = 55.6 years

  1. 6 years +16 years = ~72 years old

Add to that the time value of money (the set up expenses are all time 0) and it gets exponentially worse.

More fun “green math” for you. 1 Tesla Powerwall stores 12.2 kWh of energy. To give you an idea of the power density of fossil fuels. If I wanted to store diesel in my garage instead of a Powerwall, I’d need 4.8 cups.

Believe what you want. Investment in EV is a poor financial decision. But hey! Do it because you believe you are saving the world.

From your remarks it would seem that you know little about EVs or investing. I won’t be taking any advice from you on either one.

Ironic that people who hate fossil fuels spend their days supporting the very companies that exist to find and develop fossil fuels. No wonder so many are unhappy. Doesn’t seem like a lot of intelligence there, does it?

Mr. 1985, I have 2 fireplaces which can burn wood or switch over to natural gas. Quiet, dependable and cheap. Keeps me warm whether grid is up or down.

And most boomers in Texas don’t drive or want a BMW. We drive big gas guzzling trucks to pull our boats up to our vacation homes in the mountains and then later to our beach resorts. I always blow my ho-n at the little EVs on the road just to be friendly.

Ever heard of an outdoor grill? Smoker? Campfire? Make really good coffee and great meals, so we don’t need your little microwave. I bet your neighbors would rather come to my place for some smoked brisket instead of that cardboard lasagna you nuked in the microwave for them. But it was a nice gesture. Proud of you for that little Joe.

Hold up. What year is this? Where can I get new Toyota Camry for 16k? They cost more than that in the 1990s.

Priorities. I live in a location where the power still runs when the temperatures drop low. Zero reason to have a power wall to stay warm. I'll take the fun BMW vs your good feeling power wall any day.

A car getting 25 mpg at $3/gal will spend $12,000 on fuel over 100k miles. At a cost of $16k for a new Toyota camry, fuel and car at $28k?

An EV can get 0.29kwh/mi, so 29,000 kwh at 13 cents per kwh is $3770 in electricity costs. Since Tesla starts at $38k, easily paying near $42k to buy a new EV for 100k MI.

At $16k vs $38k to drive it off the lot, that difference can be invested in the stock market for an even greater return allowing the ICE to come out well ahead.

Those that throw out EV numbers just do so without doing the math and just repeat what talking head green lobbyists state. EV still doesn't make financial sense right now. Pass!

To the person that asked about the cost of my Tesla wall. Yes it cost 20k but its all about priorities. Instead of buying an overpriced luxury BMW sedan like you boomers I chose to invest it energy independence. During the winter storm all my appliances worked 100% without having to use a loud fossil fuel dependent gasoline generator. I had my neighbors over so they could warm up, make some coffee and cook a warm meal using my microwave. Welcome to modern times boomers. As much as you want it too 1985 is NEVER coming back!

From Tesla:

Each Powerwall 2 costs $5,550, and the average US home will need 2 or 3 to supply its power needs. A single Powerwall can provide limited backup power for critical appliances and lights, but not enough for the entire power usage of a typical house. Additional costs required for installation and maintenance.

And this is only true if the power wall is tied to solar panels, which average $20k+ for a typical home.

I am glad you stayed warm. Hope that Netflix subscription was worth about $40k. Did you binge Gilmore Girls or Barney?

I too have a Tesla wall and its awsome! During the winter storm I kept warm with an electric blanket and watched Netflix the whole time. All powered by power my Tesla wall. How did you fossil fuel dependent boomers spend the winter storm? Driving around looking for gas? Silly fools.

If you actually tracked what you spent on gasoline lifetime (or over a significant period of time), you’d NEVER claim that a baby Tesla was more than your lifetime fuel cost. What a sh!tkicker comment.

10 will get you 20 that a non insignificant number of folks will switch their next car purchase to electric after this.

People need to stop acting like we're entitled to our customer base. Its the other way around. And if we can't meet demands then we will permanently lose them.

I drive a Tesla and have solar panels powering my Tesla wall. I can charge my model 3 and power my home indefinitely without gas or the grid. Fossil fuels and dependency on incompetent companies and government is the way to go? Not for me losers!

@OP It was a coordinated cyberattack that took the pipeline down. I’m not sure I’m following you here.

If anything, this cyberattack exposes the vulnerability caused by over dependence on fossil fuels, not to mention the inadequate cyber security protocols of large O&G companies. Let’s also remember that the TX grid collapsed during the February freeze due largely to a complete failure of the natural gas power systems there, not wind, solar, vegetarians in CA, etc.

Yeah, you are right. Guess those 18 wheelers sitting idle doesn’t impact anyone, after all who needs goods delivered? And with summer almost here, no heating oil needed. Planes fly on unicorn milk, not jet fuel, so no impact there. Colonial is a major supplier of fuel for US military and yeah, nobody needs them. If nobody can get to work because there is no fuel, I don’t see any impact there either.

Boy if only everyone could be as smart as you. Nothing to see here folks, just a little fuel shortage. Will be no impacts. No one will ever notice. Thank you so much!

My my, must have hit a nerve tonight. There are PLENTY of people that would prohibit all fossil fuel usage immediately if they had the power (no pun intended), including lots of politicians. And that day may come, possibly sooner than anyone thinks. You are naive if you don’t see this threat, but hey, I won’t engage you because you must be a millennial. LOL. Touché

Diesel generators are widely used at most Coal, Gas and Oil Fired Power Plants and virtually all Nuclear Power Plants in the United States. Take diesel away from any power plant and it is shut down, period.

People like you only see the short term. No one’s talking about eliminating oil and gas ASAP, and if they are they’re so removed from reality it’s not worth engaging them.

It’s the looming transition that many believe the company isn’t prepared for and could take us out of business in the long term. You need to acknowledge that - or perhaps you don’t because you’re a boomer.

Diesel generators aren't even a major contributor to the electric grid. If they're running fossil fuels, it's nat gas & coal.
