“Return to work”

I understand no CL bumps or raises. I can even stomach the 401(k) match going away for a few years. But words matter, and I swear, if I hear the campus repopulation efforts referenced as a “return to work” ONE more time, I might lose it.

Sure, there are some people who are undoubtedly taking advantage of WFH to slack off, but some of us (myself included) have worked all hours of the day and night from home to keep the ship afloat. In my case, nearly half my team has been PIP’d-off or laid-off, but there’s been no reduction in the amount of work output expected from us. I’m doing the work of three people and regularly clocking 70-80+ hour work weeks, and it’s completely unsustainable health-wise.

Oh, and I’ve been following the reduced-capacity calendar to a T and showing up in-person to work from EMHC on my assigned days.

So, if May 17th is a “return to work,” then WHAT, pray tell, does Dallas think I’ve been doing for the last 14 months? I’d love for them to tell me.

Slacker, I am sure you've got so comfortable at home. What's the big deal about going back to EMHC in full force just like pre-COVID. You are fully vaccinated and most, if not all of the emps there as well. So if you are complaining, you better WFH indefinitely in your own terms, not with EM.

Get back to work in the office or find a job somewhere else, then go into work there. You should quit EM immediately so you’ll have enough time to focus finding your dream job. Too bad EM is going to sink without you, but I don’t see that happening, sorry to burst your bubble. No one is going to miss you. The reality is if you work at the campus, you create nothing but overhead. The campus is going to be converted to an Amazon warehouse.

Return to work. Oh, sorry if you just lost it.

Houston (Spring) should feel lucky that you were able to work from home for the last 14 months. The CEO of Phillips 66 had their employees in Houston HDQ's return to the office in July 2020.

DENVER/HOUSTON (Reuters) - About 20 employees of U.S. oil refiner Phillips 66 tested positive at its Texas headquarters for COVID-19 in recent weeks, people familiar with the matter said, alarming employees as the company strove to keep staff working in its offices.

Texas has reported record daily cases of the virus this week and Houston hospitals began emergency staffing and occupancy measures. On Thursday, the state ordered face masks be worn in public, reversing officials’ earlier opposition to a mandate.

Phillips 66, which began bringing back its 2,000 headquarters staff in May, has become a test case for Houston employers looking to recall workers from home offices.

In a video to employees, Chief Executive Greg Garland said their return would support its main product, gasoline, and be fair to company employees who cannot work from home, according to a video transcript reviewed by Reuters.

“Our company bled $1.6 billion of cash in the first quarter. We’ll bleed at least that much in the second quarter,” he said, adding that weak fuel sales put employee jobs in jeopardy. “If people don’t commute, we don’t have a viable business model.”

The company also had very few COVID-19 cases and no workplace transmission that it knew of, he added.

But since then, the rising number of employee cases has troubled staff, according to four people who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to media. Phillips only recently mandated masks be worn in all areas of its offices.

Employees had expressed concern about going to work amid Texas’ surge in cases and were unhappy about the relative protection of top executives with private elevators and enclosed offices, the sources said.

A Phillips 66 spokesman said in a written reply to questions that the safety of employees, contractors and communities was the company’s top priority.

Employee “monitoring, isolation and/or quarantining is taking place as necessary,” he said, but did not respond to a question on the number of cases.

Office seating complied with social distancing guidelines, and where this was not possible, employees worked staggered shifts, the company said.

The unfortunate reality is some groups lost track of personnel whereabouts and everyone is now having to pay the consequences. Several folks left town to "WFH" since some groups haven't had a mandate to show up at the Houston Campus every so often. Instead of dealing with the percentage of the population that's abusing the flexibility rules, everyone else is losing their flexibility.

The lack of CL bumps, raises, and 401k match is a "business" mechanism to push workloads to lower salary groups. All job descriptions will be two CL groups lower than what they were in 2020 with few opportunities to be promoted to executives long term. .

Wait until the Outsourcing to lower cost countries picks up steam in 2H2021.

OP has a good point about the term “ return to work”. It is offensive and implies that someone has not been working. This is a term used for when people are sick and they come back.

I thought I was in an unlucky team or in an unlucky business group when half of the team, including myself, was PIP'ed last year. But it seems that the PIP'ed and layoff is across the board, including your team. I'm sorry to hear that and the amount of extra work stress. I hope it gets better. But for me, looking back at my stressful time at XOM and looking forward to my new opportunity to going a great school in the fall, I am quite glad I got PIP'ed out and got to leave XOM.

The only messaging that management carefully considers is to external parties and covering up failures with “successes” or “new direction”.

Don’t think twice about how they reference the employees but I guess I am so lucky to have a job.

Fu-k that place, get the fu-k out if you can! Green will be greener (it’s a fu----g desert wasteland at the place right now, just about anything is better).
