I'm an RF Engineer that took the layoff in 2018. Since my career was stalled so I decided to leave in hopes of finding a better company to work for. Here we are in 2021 and still not working in the field I spent so much time in.
If you watch the business channels they all preach the coming 5G revolution without anything to back it up except faster speeds and some niche applications. The iterations of the wireless generations were very successful and here we are today with internet in our hands and not being able to live without it. In the meantime I would recommend reading a book called the 5G myth that's somewhat technical and explains why 5G will not be the blockbuster success of previous generations.
Business leaders compare the United States and China citing that they are building hundreds of thousands of 5G cells per year far outpacing us and we can't afford to fall behind. My take on all this is that China is a surveillance state on steroids that needs this technology to keep a grip on its citizens. So, if we take law enforcement needs out of the equation what do we really need 5G for to justify the massive expensive buildout that'll cost the carriers and no promise of return on investment. Of course if we keep law enforcement in the equation then the promised buildout costs will largely fall on our cash starved governments. God Luck on keeping your job with VZW and seriously consider retaining to prepare for whenever the next round of layoffs happens.

Thanks for tip on the book. I was in RF too but as a Field Tech. Left in 2018.What suprised me was how many others in the field and RF side had no RF background, but were supposibly the "Rock Stars". Sorry that you left. I bet you are missed! Keep looking too by the way!
Pretty sure the marketing of 5G to consumers is mostly for them to have money to build out 5G for other reasons and applications. It's basically useless on a phone unless you are talking about UW. UW is really dang fast if you're lucky to be in a area/city with it. NW speed tests basically the same as the 4gees
Did you wear your tinfoil hat today?
The future state of robotics (cars, medicine, etc.) will rely heavily on 5G. That's your use case.
No it doesn't. 5G isn't a deep state surveillance tool at all. It's a network calm down take the tin foil hat off.
Makes sense. Love it.
Huh?!?!?
