Thread regarding DXC Technology layoffs

Question for old-timers

I have to ask, was there ever a time when working here was actually enjoyable? When people came to work with a smile on their face instead of the dread and resignation I see every day? I've only been here for a little over a year, so for me that's the only thing I know. But it's still hard to believe it's always been like this...

You would have to go back decades probably. I remember on day three of the job in 2004 being told that instead of a multi skilled job I applied for from outside the organisation that the SDM had announced we would all be ‘siloed’ into one specific line of service, a really stupid decision and one that deskilled employees en mass and demoralised. It really did take years before they decided to sc-ap that counter-productive idea and start trying to reverse the damage, but by then it wasn’t for altruistic reasons, my guess it was because they started shredding so many staff in constant WFRs that they needed the non ‘currently at risk’ employees to pick up the slack of the work left behind by those that had either taken VR or binned as compulsory.

It’s fun and enjoyable NOW. I come to work with a smile on my face NOW. I don’t understand al the misplaced longing for the “old days”. I live in the present and am happy to do so.

Yes, this company was founded on incompetence and continues down that path. Yes, the management team is third string and basically useless. Yes, the workplace is chaotic and counter-productive. But rather that criticize these realities, I choose to acknowledge and embrace them. It’s actually quite entertaining to sit back and watch the insecure and immature scratching at each other’s throats. All with a smile on my face as I put another easy paycheck in my pocket.

I enjoy the work I do, but not the dysfunctional organization, the impossibility of getting simple things done and duplicitous senior management. I dream of escape, come on Harry, you can do it!

It has been fun and enjoyable at time, but since the advent of the Frankenstein monster that is DXC, not at all. Yes I came from EDS, and there if you worked hard you got rewarded and that made it meaningful. HP/HPE I had to beat into giving a pay rise, which solved many years of nothing, but I was lucky in that for a number of years I worked with a really good team. Then DXC came along, cut, cut, cut with no strategy, no real sense of team and no chance of reward. So completely enjoyable except in those time when the customer brightens up the day.

Certainly not since 2014. That's when I started, and I was assured that the company was turning around as part of a transformation to "Digital". Still waiting for that transformation.
