How do you defend yourself from backstabbers?

Recently, a younger colleague complained to me that he is a victim of backstabbing and that he would prefer to leave the company because he does not know how to deal with it.

Sticking a knife in someone's back is nothing new here. It took me a long time to recognize and anticipate all the situations in which this could happen in order to protect myself in a timely manner.

What I notice now is that over time this problem has gotten bigger, and it certainly wouldn’t have gotten bigger if Nike punished such behavior. Quite the opposite of what's happening.

Good points. I've found people like that tend to not be very smart and lack emotional intelligence, which is why they behave the way they do. Sadly, I've seen these types continue to grow in numbers and prosper at Nike over the years. Definitely a lack of good people managers and leadership who only wants to hear good news plays a large role in this.

Those who "backstab" teammates, colleagues, subordinates, etc. are obviously the ones with a deep flaw in their personality and are the ones trying to conceal lack of knowledge, know-how, and common decency. True, there are too many of them around and our culture at Nike has not done anything to stop that sort of behavior. The best thing you can do is always tell the truth, rise above these people and their behaviors, be true to who you are, and even be kind to them. Do not let them have any perceived power or authority over you. I work for a department with a high number of backstabbers and I would have walked away years ago had I allowed that behavior to control me.
