I can get behind finding a better job than Macy’s. However, anyone who is wanting to leave please make sure you don’t leave before having something that provides job security despite the pandemic. Make sure to ask questions during your interviews, research companies you are interested in, look for employee reviews or comments and no matter what DON’T quit unless you have another position secured. Don’t make the same mistake I made.

I am telling you after 30 years I left it is the best thing I ever did jobs are out there mine is awesome!
To the commenter who said "You "gave" $10 because your hands were tied by corporate. Workers at that level "take" whatever they are offered, knowing not to ask for more"
Not necessarily, have you been in a position to interview and hire workers in a retail environment? I have. I had applicants ask for 1-5 dollars more. I made my offers based on what I thought was fair. Mind you, some applicants already had a full-time job, they just wanted something on the side and something easy. Others were not realistic or were what you would call overqualified. There are many factors to look at, including the type of work and difficulty of it. When I said I offered "no less than $10 to start with", yes I'm correcting you, that didn't mean I didn't offer more to some. Anything more than 10 or 10.50 I would start getting pushback from higher-ups, not as easy to approve.
In NYC the minimum is $15.00. Most new hires are hired at that but it depends. In cosmetics you can be hired at 25 an hour with commission. In my department in my NYC store , most of us make over 20 an hour and it is "ok" but still not enough when you are paying for macy's expensive health plan, plus your own bills.
To annon. commenting on minimum wages, did you not read WM new wage structure? Targets, Amazons, Starbucks and dozens more major corporations ALL with a massive presence in the South. All paying $15 and more to starr new hires.
You "gave" $10 because your hands were tied by corporate. Workers at that level "take" whatever they are offered, knowing not to ask for more.
All of this points to the real wages already being paid across America that are "liveable". Versus those employers still paying the very least possible for no other reason than they are allowed to by states with low minimums.
When I started working the minimum wage was $2 an hour, and my "exec trainee" job, after college, with a national retailer paid a whopping $3.25 an hour. Things change, sometimes quickly, other times not.
To the poster who stated "And yes Joe B has announced his desire for a national $15 minimum wages. Though he says it should be gradually introduced particularly in backward thinking southern states where minimum wages still hover around a paltry $8 hr"
What planet are you living in? Showing your ignorance and liberalism eh? Would it surprise you if I told you that the minimum wage in 31 states is below $10, yes you read that correctly, only 19 states have a minimum wage of $10 or higher. New York is 11.80 , New Jersey 11, Massachusetts is 12.75 which is 2nd highest only to DC at 15. Can you really live comfortably in NY making 11.80? I seriously doubt it and the cost of living is way higher in NY than in southern states.
Would I want people to make $15 per hour, yes that would be nice but be realistic. Just for comparison, at my store, in a southern state, I offered no less than $10 to start with, 10.50 if I felt real good about them. I had my hands tied to offer more but I felt I could easily give 10 without resistance.
One last thing, if we are to make the minimum wage @ $15, what are you going to pay the people who were already making 15 or have more experience and were earning just above 15? Are you going to give them a raise also? It wouldn't make sense to start a new hire at 15 and keep someone who has been working there for 10 years+ at barely 15hr. So are you going to raise their pay also?
"Walmart announced Thursday it will raise pay for workers to an average above $15 an hour, giving a boost to 425,000 employees.
Beginning March 13, the company said, pay for store workers in digital and stocking positions will go up to $13 to $19 an hour, depending on store location.
Rivals Amazon and Target have earlier last year made their starting wages $15 an hour."
And yes Joe B has announced his desire for a national $15 minimum wages. Though he says it should be gradually introduced particularly in backward thinking southern states where minimum wages still hover around a paltry $8 hr.
Meanwhile:
"The decelerating pace of e-commerce growth rate points to some challenges it will face as tailwinds from the global health crisis trends fade. More Americans are getting Covid vaccines and can spend their budget in other ways."
In other words, once CV truly recedes from pandemic to mere endemic status, the world is ready to get up, get out, travel, party and be human again.
Shopping in department stores? Fugedaboudit.
I'm sure most people will say they wish they had a better job regardless where they work. Sometimes we have to look at the positives and negatives of the job or company and what's out there. You have to decide what's best for you. I had a choice to take a package and leave. I turned down what would had made me secure for at least 4 months but at the time the country was starting to reopen, many companies were still closed or not fully reopened. I chose to stay in hopes things would improve, so far it was a wise decision. Doesn't mean I will be here 6-12 months from now, who knows, it's not great but it's not bad, I get along well with everyone and not under a lot of stress. If anything I'm thankful I have a job. But I'm not blind, i really can't see myself here for the long run unless some things improve and the store does well.
That reminds me, last year this guy who was with Macy's almost 10yrs decided to leave for what he thought was a better job. He had been saying he was leaving for over a year. He finally made the jump, although I was surprised at the job he took. Months later I saw him and asked how the job was going. He told me he quit the job in less than a month and was still looking for something. It's always good to do your homework before making a change.
