Thread regarding Verizon Wireless layoffs

Being debt free makes this so much easier to deal with

I started working at Verizon back in 2011 and left in 2019... During (2011-2016) the money was amazing I was easily pulling in $4,250 to $8,000 commission checks and that wasn’t including hourly and overtime. Things started to change around late 2015 that’s when I started to see the writing on the wall. At the time people in my store were going deeply into debt, buying houses, buying cars, having kids, taking on massive liabilities and most importantly not saving money.

It was around this time I became obsessed with paying off my student loans ($58,000) and others debts adding up to $162,000... When I told people my plan I was laughed at and told student loans and CC debt were normal which I almost believed.

In the summer of 2018 I was completely debt free no student loans, no credit card debt, no car debt, no house debt I WAS COMPLETELY 100% DEBT FREE. This was the most freeing thing ever commission changes no longer really bothered me... Being debt free and having a low cost of living makes life SOOO much less stressful. During this time I paid off all my debts while my coworkers were refinancing houses, having more kids, going deeper into credit card debt and taking out student loans etc...

The commission changes became unbearable for many of my coworkers and caused them to go DEEPER into debt it was a viscous cycle to watch but I could do nothing but watch them take the axe that I knew was coming.

Moral of the story is when working somewhere like Verizon USE them to get debt free at the very least and don’t try to keep up with the Joneses it’s a game you will lose and the added stress isn’t worth it. Save your money, pay off all debts and decrease your monthly cost of living as much as possible. Just my $0.02 remember debt causes stress and limits options it’s a cancer so just get rid of it.

“ Why bring kids into the mix if you already know you live paycheck to paycheck.”

This happens more often than not. Who knows, you’re probably a paycheck to paycheck baby yourself.

YES. I came out of school with 50k in loans and ignorantly got a new car. Medical issues had me rack up credit card debt. I've paid off my cards and kept them at 0. 2020 was amazing in that the forbearance has allowed me to decimate my student loans! I only have 1 left and my car. I'm gonna become debt free this year.

The down voters must be driving fancy cars to impress strangers on the road and get Instabrag likes. Leasing is for fools.

The moral of the story OP trying to convey is... USE Verizon like they use US... get your tuition reimbursement, take all your pto days, take care of medical dental, pay down debts and dont get attached to working here cause any day could be the last. At my store we are waiting for the bad news we are down to 4 reps in the mean time we are all getting ready.

Was your position a–?? Commission s were always capped at 200% so even as a heavy hitter most maximum Commission s were about $5,000 and was capped by the company. If you did do that type of volume your psyche must be shot or you had thick skin helping miserable customer s one after another, I applaud you not many people could do that for 8 years in a corporate store with the micromanaging store Mgmt culture of the time. With all the commission changes since 2016 it was tougher to get to those levels even in a high volume store? Did Verizon offer you anything to stay because your numbers must have not zone and Region leading but Nationwide leading. Where did you on your President s Cabinet trip in 2015?

Debt free = very boring life. I know so many savers and penny pinchers that died young. Live your life every day like it’s your last. Obviously live within your means but it seems like a lot of people die a few years into retirement so have fun now before it’s too late.

Well yeah you're not going into debt investing your money. Even if you put a chunk in to an easy stock with dividends would be better then sitting in your checking or savings.

Why would you ever keep almost 200k in liquid cash? You do know that ever second, minute, hour and day that passes your cash becomes more worthless. You need to diversify if even with some very low risk stuff investments.

Wow!!!!!! I am exactly like you in my store except I haven’t told anyone I’m debt free and have over $180,000 sitting in a savings account. My cost of living is also below $1,200 a month... congrats on becoming debt free around unlike minded people. Like you said being debt free opens up a lot of options.
