Whistle Blowing & Gaslighting

It seems there aren’t a lot of good places to go to when things go rotten at Nike. HR dept will eventually get ahold of most employee problems that arise and leave us all wondering if anything is actually registering. When the story eventually breaks on a certain international footballers misdeeds against an employee while under contract and the ensuing fallout we will see the true ability of the department to sweep under the carpet and gaslight the most vulnerable of our peers.

Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which a person or a group covertly sows seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or group, making them question their own memory, perception, or judgment. It may evoke changes in them such as cognitive dissonance or low self-esteem, rendering the victim additionally dependent on the gaslighter for emotional support and validation. Using denial, misdirection, contradiction, and misinformation, gaslighting involves attempts to destabilize the victim and delegitimize the victim's beliefs.

Have you experienced gaslighting at Nike? Share your experience and let our peers know they don’t need to hide, together we can see “the right thing” gets done.

Not uncommon to feel like a hostage at Nike. Doing everything you can to survive while feeling like you can’t win regardless of what you do. Don’t be ashamed and don’t harm yourself, the place can be soul s—ing for some. Remember it is designed much like a pyramid scheme - to keep those on top stepping and balancing themselves on minions who do all the work under constant threats, fear and intimidations aka performance reviews, CFE, back stabbing, 360 feedback from bullies with a sole purpose of making themselves feel good and powerful while inflicting pain and control on those lower on the totem pole. Why stay? Between the pandemic, family obligations, hope that things will change, believing the mission of the company with catchy phrases, personal pride, degraded self esteem this will lead you down a rabbit hole. Hang on tight, like Sprank used to say,...” create your plan and work the plan”, the place is ran by the invisible hand of fear and control - it’ okay, bring on the down arrows if you disagree LOL

My psychologist let me know that Nike has a well known negative reputation amongst those in their profession in PDX and beyond. Oddly, It felt a bit better to hear that I haven’t been alone in the horrible treatment I’ve put up with that drove me to need treatment. However, I’m heartbroken to think others that I’ve seen around campus for years are in the same boat. Stomaching treatment at work that we know is just so so wrong. It seems like even if you survive the gauntlet that is HR nothing will change. From my observation it seems you’re more likely to start getting plotted against behind your back if your grievance is legitimate. As much as I want to stand up for myself, it’s panic attack provoking to imagine doing so. Am I alone in this turmoil? Or is the doc right that there are more or even many like me? God bless those feeling this same pain. Please put your mental health first. I started seeing a psych because my problems confronted me, I had begun harming myself, so hard to say but there it is. Embarrassed that I’ve let this company drag me to such a place.

It is one think to collect people’s personal data for everyone’s safety. It is completely another to harass, intimidate and threaten contractors either to keep their mouth shut or as part of a sick game.

@doesmyheadcount.

Wow. 10 years! That's insane. I thought my 2 1/2 years was a lot. You've probably thought about this already, but have you considered forming your own LLC and paying yourself through that? (If you really want to stay which I'm assuming you do) It also begs the most obvious question which is why they don't just give you a black badge? Is it one of those functions which they only outsource?

ETWs don't get a ton of love on this board, but that is one of those roles at Nike where it's very easy to end up in a situation where you realize you've been strung along for years under some hopeless idea that you'll finally get recognized.

If you've been an ETW on your team for over a year and there's no talk of conversion you better just start looking for other opportunities at Nike. They obviously value the work you do, but most likely they don't value you as a person. The longer you stay the more awkward it'll get.

How about getting strung along as an ETW for a decade and being told I’m lucky that the company is being flexible for me by designing pay arrangements through their vendors to keep me on when I was supposed to take multiple required leaves due to their own ETW policies. Getting told you’re out unless there is a vendor you can find to pay your salary with a markup... does that count?
