Thread regarding Enbridge Inc. layoffs

How hard was it for you to develop a career here?

Some people think that it is hard for minorities to build a career in this company, but I think that we are all in an equally bad position here except for a few brown nosers. When I first got a job here, I thought my efforts would be rewarded, but for years I watched those who deserved it the least making progress and getting promoted. Perhaps before my time the situation was different but for as long as I've been here, 5 years or so, the promotion is reserved only for the favorites.

My personal opinion, is that moving up in this company isn’t easy. I’m a white, middle aged, male who hasn’t received a promotion yet in my five years. That could be my fault or it could be the company’s unwillingness/incapability to move me up. I’ve seen lots of capable and intelligent people be promoted. I’ve seen lots of of people promoted who were neither capable nor intelligent. Most people have been white men but certainly not all.
I think the biggest issue is just a lack of growth within the company. Without growth all of us are just waiting around for a handful of people to quit/get fired/retire. It makes for a long wait.

Your experience may vary.

Started in a junior position over twenty years go. 8 roles, 6 of them promotions, two requested lateral moves. Never once advanced for any reason other than competency and willingness to take on anything necessary.

What I have noticed is that people who complain about various types of drama sure seem to find themselves surrounded by it... a lot.

Hard. Target was always moving and vague. Told I was an outsider. Continually. Now I really am on the outside and things seem better.

I am one of the people who left recently. For years I've had great performance review. I kept asking my manager what I was missing that prevented me from advancing. He had no feedback for me, and I kept watching my peers who made a lot of f— ups quickly advance. It didn't help that I was the only person of color in the cohort and all the people who advanced were white. Am all white management will always promote their own. It was a rude awakening for me. All this diversity and inclusion talk are just a PR stunt. Some of the areas at enbridge are rotten to the core.

In IT, there have been a succession of execs who either promoted their pals or brought in their own boys and did the same in the opposite direction. They needed crutches to prop them up.

I tend to disagree with this blanket statement because I have seen a lot of minorities promoted at Enbridge - I have also seen a lot of people who believe they should be promoted based on years of service and not qualifications or appropriate skill-sets. While I agree that nepotism has played a part in hiring/promotions, I am also aware of a LOT of people who think they are more qualified than they are to move up. Legacy Spectra was notorious for promoting unqualified people because of the 'good ole boys club'. Not saying Enbridge is much better, but I have seen a huge improvement in the treatment of minorities in the past 10-years.

It's like the MATRIX, take the Red pill and escape. Pull the handle and flush or learn to kiss up.

I'd say it boils down to management. LUG has a lot of incompetent lifers on its payroll. They wouldnt see talent even if it slapped them on the face.

I recently left after years of doing great work and even networking aggressively to get advancement opportunities. I was constantly being blocked. Finally I had had enough and left for another position. Enbridge is comfortable but it's not worth stalling my career for.

Yes, I've seen and worked with people who were awarded positions where they had neither the necessary qualifications or experience. Both inside and outside hires that were somehow connected by relations or whatever. It was very sickening and demoralizing to witness. I'm so glad to be out of that pathetic environment. Getting laid of has turned out to be a very good thing. In Enbridge, you don't get rewarded for what you know. You get rewarded for who you know. It was this way with Spectra Energy as well.

Yeah I have to agree that who you know matters more than what.

As the saying goes, it is not so much what you know, it's who you know. This is a natural law in corporations.

Don’t know about Enbridge but at Legacy Union this is definitely a thing . The nepotism and favouritism is rampant and extreme. Talent or skills are secondary. Some people have left recently as a result .
