In every job discription there is a little section that says along the lines of... And anything else you are asked to do by management.
So really.. that can include anything for any associate in the building.
That is why most associates cross train, or why cashier's zone and fold clothes or help in CPU, bakery, cafe etc. Why team leads are going through new training to take on more tasks that would previously been management tasks. Etc etc etc. Because of that sentence, any one, at any time can have job duties added without ever changing their job description. It is how there are no longer desk associates but only frontline associates.
From reading, I see pretty much every club runs similar. With some being a little better or a little worse, obviously depending on individuals running it and their views on how thing should be done and by whom as well as based on labor. It also sounds like every club is short staffed with a high turn over rate, leaving whomever is there to pick up the slack.
I am an MSL, I can say I work my butt off. Whether it is my duties, what may have previously been management duties, cashiering, cleaning, running the desk because we are short or just that busy, helping tbc when they are short, folding clothes, zoning, exit door, entrance, liquor store, I work cafe when they need it. We always run jewelry at my store unless the 1, very part time associate is there. We have to push carts all day when we are short member assist, which sadly is often. We do everything, every single day. Not all 4 or 5 of us necessarily unless they have to, but most of us really do work that hard. We get plus, credits and SNG ourselves, we train our new people as well as have them shadow their peers. Constantly do 1 on 1s to get associate feedbacks and train them in areas they feel or are struggling in. This is all expected of us at my club. It is all our job description. I feel bad hearing so much negativity from other clubs regarding MSL or team leads in general. Because we do a LOT in our club. I average 18k steps a day, running back and forth.
I am sorry for anyone, at any club, who's team leads don't do the same. I would never ask anyone to do something I myself can not or will not do. That is not leadership. That is dictatorship. That doesn't mean I don't ask people to do things or expect them to do their own job especially, but I am always along side doing it too, or doing something else in another area that needs it. For the most part this is how our club runs. Our team leads for the most part work their butts off as management, as associates, whenever and where ever we are needed. Do I have associates who don't like me??? For sure. You will never have everyone like you. But there isn't 1 associate who can say I don't work. That WE don't work. In fact is common knowledge that we k__l ourselves. Most in our store do not want our jobs and frequently say so. Whenever there is a position open and we suggest someone try applying, they are like "nope, no thank you!" Because they make $2-3 less to do a lot less. Does that make their job less hard or stressful?? No way! We all have our pressures. But the TL at my club care and do OUR JOBS to help them succeed and ease whatever burdens and barriers our associates have. I have associates coming to me from all areas with their greivances, not just my own. It is my job to help them and advise them, whenever and wherever I can.
I hope the rest of you soon find stronger leadership in your TLs. They SHOULD be the back bone of every club.
