Question about Tech Layoffs

Saul said the next technology layoffs will begin in in the second quarter + go into the third quarter this year. Does anyone happen to know why they are holding off doing any in the first quarter all of a sudden?

Guys the big tech firms are hiring like crazy, i think combined they hired over a few million workers in 2020. I just moved positions, have no more anxiety and unneccessary stress for missing a period!

I would suggest if you are in tech start looking for a real tech role, almost every company in US dying for tech workers with current skills.

Feel like wage slave, but a well paid wage slave. Good news is I can prob save 700k and put in investments to increase it with this salary level outside of wells fargo to add to retirement and move my retirement up a decade, while you guys are still pushing paper around the bank and rest of world is digital.

@iyw+195f5tF1 You said it perfectly bubba. The incompetent ICS architects have legit been working on a cloud security strategy since 2012. And produced Jack squat worth of value and mitigation in cloud space

we've had India on our team fo 2+ years now. They don't do much. Never deliver quality work. What if outsourcing of some areas is just not possible? why are they on the payroll?

They want to give you time to train your offshore replacement. Don’t do it.

most of the work here is fake work, just to keep people busy with really no need for it

They need time to staff up India first and get resources in place there to absorb all the work from local layoffs here

yea but internal IT is not revenue generating; they do need to move to cloud, but ICS is not qualified in cloud nor do they understand it so they are slowing things down due to lack of knowledge, that group need to get qualified workers versus these people who work here decades with 0 tech experience

The business I report into did really well last year. Probably could have done better give or take the pandemic but the news is certainly not all bad. You'd never know that from reading this blog though.

There is a lot of work going on in the infrastructure space, a new senior leader there (mini-me SVB) and there is no solid plan for 'the cloud'. Planning needs to happen. So they can scr*w up royally.

lol, 'failing company'. Some yahoo posts this in every thread on this site as if wishing it to be true would make it a reality. The fact of the matter is that WFC should have trimmed the fat slowly ever since the Wachovia merger but former leaders failed to do it, and now some of the bloat has to go and the process will be much less orderly than it should have been. Once the efficiency issue is resolved and we get out from under some consent orders and the asset cap, we'll go right back to making $4-5B / quarter. Even with the bloat and cap we make billions. That's not what a failing company looks like. Our core businesses make a lot of money, and will continue to do so.

Interesting question. The further into the year we get the more PTO we accrue and the more it costs them to buy us out. That having been said, there's yet another round of reorgs going on so maybe they're just being cautious.

People in tech should be getting jobs outside the company at this point. There are over 5 million tech jobs in the us that cant even be filled. No reason they are staying here. Some other domains can too. There are a few domains where it would be much harder or less jobs.

Union is stupid, in an organization like this one. This is a failing company, Google is a successful company. What do you want this one to go under water and no one is working?

Why not look to form a union now? Don't underestimate your strength in numbers. Band together and reach out to a union leader for advice. Doesn't hurt.

Probably needs more time to sell us off to India.

Because we only have so many people/capacity in displacement operations and there are thousands going in other businesses in Q1. They can’t layoff unlimited people at once.
